Local sustainable brand Seljak thundered onto our radar last year with its closed loop camping blanket, made in Australia from factory offcuts otherwise bound for landfill. Now, they have upped their eco-power by partnering with sustainable designers supercyclers to create a more robust piece of furniture for your home!
The Pressing Matters Floor Lounger is composed of recycled mattress filling that has been shredded and compressed into this piece of cell-shaped modular furniture. The sturdy, curvy pod is a totally solid form and holds the waste of approximately two mattresses!
Given that 87% of discarded textiles around the world are either sent to landfill or incinerated (a process which releases greenhouse gases) and mattresses hold five kilograms of unrecyclable filler, Seljak and supercyclers have innovated around this gaping hole in the production cycle. The lounger itself can even be recycled at the end of its life, making it a totally closed loop product!
Though it is still in prototype phase, the Pressing Matters Floor Lounger has been selected as one of five finalists in the Australian Furniture Design Award (postponed until further notice). The winner will receive $20,000 and an invitation from Stylecraft to develop the design through to commercial production for distribution. Fingers crossed!
