After three decades working across architecture, interiors, and furniture, Melbourne designer John Bastiras is entering a new chapter with the official launch of his own furniture practice, Studio Bastiras.
John — co-founder of In Good Company — has long had an eye for pieces that feel considered but never overly serious: furniture with a sense of warmth, character and, above all, designed to last.
Studio Bastiras brings that sensibility into focus, with a collection of locally designed and custom-manufactured pieces made to become part of the everyday home and workplace.
Designed around a simple idea — objects of a life well lived — the collection includes stools, sideboards, bedside tables and dining tables, with bespoke commissions also available in collaboration with some of Australia’s leading architects and interior designers.
One of the collection standouts is the Meguro Stool — a versatile piece that works just as happily beside the bed as it does next to the sofa or pulled up to the dining table when an extra seat is needed. Made from sustainably sourced American Oak and available in custom sizes, the stool takes its name and inspiration from Tokyo’s Meguro Catholic Church, designed by architect Antonin Raymond in 1957 — a building John encountered during a visit to the city.
There’s a similar sense of simplicity and warmth to the Olivia Dining Table, also crafted from American Oak and available to custom order in a range of sizes and stain options. It’s the kind of table that is made for lingering around — gathering family and friends for long lunches, shared meals and everything in between.
