This Melbourne Design Week, two Australian legends, Robert Gordon and HotHaus Glass Studio, have joined forces to present Hand of the Maker — a lighting exhibition exploring the connection between artisan and object.
Hand of the Maker celebrates the subtle textures and physical intuition that define the handmade, bringing together Robert Gordon’s eight decades of ceramic heritage with the fluid, handblown works of HotHaus.
‘It’s been a great process just seeing how our clay and their glass speak to each other,’ says Bobby Gordon, director of Robert Gordon. ‘It’s a simple, honest celebration of what happens when two local studios just get in and make things.’
The collection takes inspiration from the muted hues and patterns of eucalyptus, while the exhibition itself takes this one step further with an immersive installation by Tweed Twigs.
From Thursday May 14 to Sunday May 17, visitors are welcome to discover the exhibition and new collection at The Design Files Gallery (14 Little Oxford street, Collingwood).
Pop along to the opening tonight (Thursday May 14) at 6pm, or join Amanda Dziedzic and Laurel Kohut from HotHaus Studio, Ruby Shields from Studio Shields, and the Robert Gordon team at 11am ob Saturday May 16 for a panel discussion on the place of handmade in contemporary design.
