Australia has no shortage of iconic colours, from rust-red earth to brilliant blue coastlines, and grounding green canopies. Koala’s latest collaboration with the Pantone Color Institute™ celebrates the latter.
Named Australia 01, the weathered, earthy green draws on our beautiful eucalyptus forests, coastal vegetation and native bush, and is designed to sit comfortably in both contemporary homes and relaxed interiors, shifting subtly throughout the day as the light changes.
‘It feels distinctly Australian, modern yet intrinsically connected to our sense of place,’ says Koala global head of product design Alexandra Owen.
The exclusive hue appears across a curated collection of Koala favourites, including the Torquay Modular Sofa, Koala Sofa Bed, Wanda Sofa Bed, mattresses with Australia 01 detailing, and a range of cushions and throws.
To celebrate the launch, Koala has commissioned Australian artists Shannon Heath, Dan Kyle and Niah McLeod to each create an original artwork inspired by the new Australia 01 hue. Their pieces will be auctioned from July 16– August 18 on Art Bid, with all proceeds supporting Indigenous-led conservation organisation Karrkad Kanjdji Trust.
Melburnians will also have the chance to experience the collaboration in person at a two-day pop-up in Fitzroy from July 17–18.
Designed by Emma Sandral, the immersive space brings together the Australia 01 furniture collection, commissioned artworks, plus floral workshops by XFLOS 10.30am – 12pm both days (book here), and a curated selection of books exploring Australian design and landscape from Northcote bookseller Fiend. The first 50 visitors each day receive a free full-size room spray, inspired by the collection.
It’s an opportunity to see how one thoughtfully considered colour can flow across furniture, art, floristry and interiors — and perhaps inspire a fresh appreciation for the beauty of the Australian landscape.
17–18 July, 10:00am – 4:00pm
17 Victoria Street, Fitzroy VIC 3065
