It helps to have friends in high places, and in 2026, high places refers to the Fitzroy rental market!
When Stefanie Jung and Philip Meyer were searching for a new home, their friend, architect Alex Williams, mentioned he was about to list his Fitzroy place for lease.
‘We then organised a late night viewing to see it as soon as possible, and we knew straight away that we had to have it,’ says Stefanie. ‘We ended up convincing them to take the listing down soon after, as we were completely sold on it!’
Alex had renovated the single-fronted Victorian house prior to leasing to improve its functionality and beauty. Most of the interior was completely stripped back, allowing for a new bathroom, living area, kitchen, floorboards, carpet, and joinery. Original details, such as exposed bricks, were retained where possible for character and to celebrate the home’s history.
Stefanie and Philip love the renovated spaces that balance old and new. ‘Details like the skylights, pops of colour, and the small but super lush courtyard really made it feel unique and homey straight away,’ says Stefanie. ‘Even empty, the space had so much personality that we knew it would be easy to make it feel like home.’
The couple have slowly furnished and styled the interiors to suit this specific space.
‘A lot of our existing furniture didn’t quite fit either in scale or style, so we gradually refreshed pieces to better suit the home,’ explains Stefanie.
‘We leaned into the character of the space, taking cues from elements like the exposed brick and the sage green kitchen, whilst adding contrasting elements like the chrome/metal elements. The overall direction became warm and cosy, but still refined. Minimalist, without feeling stark or cold.’
A warm neutral base is softened by walls, rugs, curtains, and upholstery creating calm, tonal backdrops tying in with the cohesive use of sage green cabinetry throughout.
Many of the pieces have come from Fitzroy’s multiple vintage stores, or in the case of some artworks, created right in the home by Stefanie and Philip.
This house is perfect for Stefanie and Philip’s stage in life, affording them a beautiful space to work from home, in walking distance of their favourite Melbourne destinations. Stefanie says, ‘We wouldn’t have it any other way!’
