Heide Museum of Modern Art is hosting the first major Australian exhibition of renowned contemporary American photographer Catherine Opie.

Opie has garnered an international reputation since the ’90s for her inspiring portraits of the queer community, and lens for exploring all-things identity.

Back in 1994, Heide Museum of Modern Art presented the artist’s first ever Australian showcase, and now the museum is gearing up to host a major survey reflecting on her inspiring body of work.

The exhibition combines key photographs from across her career, including some of her earliest, most recognisable images exploring constructs of gender and sexuality. Think family photos and bold portraits of San Francisco and Los Angeles’ LGBTQIA+ communities, alongside more recent musings on solidarity and collective action in the face of today’s global crises.

Catherine Opie has had solo shows around the world, including at the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles, the Guggenheim Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago — but this will be her first major exhibition in Australia!

Admission to see the exhibition is included with tickets to Heide Museum of Modern Art.

See Catherine Opie: Binding Ties from April 1 to July 9. Plan your visit here.
