What Are These New Billboards Across Melbourne About?

26th April, 2019

As part of ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 Festival, Liam Gillick encourages us to consider the grand sum of our actions at this pivotal point in time!

With an election just around the corner, we’re being bombarded by billboards at the moment… However, here we have a series of thought-provoking art installations unarguably rooted in fact!

Famed UK-based conceptual artist Liam Gillick has been commissioned to create billboards for Climarte‘s ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 Festival. His Some Significant Equations works command attention on the Corner of Swanston and Grattan Streets, and continue outside the Ian Potter Museum of Art in Parkville.

Displayed from April 23rd, Liam’s billboards publicise meteorologist/climatologist Syukuro ‘Suki’ Manabe’s ground-breaking global mathematical model that was the first to simulate climate change and help us better understand our planet. Astoundingly, it was developed more than half a century ago, back in 1967!

‘The work is a tribute to Suki’s hard work and the aesthetic elegance of his equations,’ describes Liam. ‘Climate change has a scientific basis that is beyond question.’

If these billboards pique your interest, you can read more about the model here. Running until late June, ART+CLIMATE=CHANGE 2019 spans a huge range of exhibitions and events across Australia, including Dr Vera Möller’s A Thousand Tides, a celebration of activist/photographer Peter Dombrovski – Dombrovskis: journeys into the wild, and many more.
