Italy is world famous for its beaches lined with colourful umbrellas in classic stripes and block colours, which are surprisingly rare in Australia… It was only a matter of time that local brand Basil Bangs filled this gap in the market!
The Italian Collection is Basil Bangs’ bespoke collection of fabric, milled in Italy, exclusively for the Aussie brand.
The collection was specifically inspired by the Aeolian Islands, located off Sicily, where Basil Bangs co-founder Mike Durante’s maternal family is from.
‘We looked to create something with a sense of heritage and heart that also reflects our Australian way of life, while honouring Italy’s design and manufacturing heritage,’ says Basil Bangs co-founder Krista Huebner.
The Italian Collection features four distinct woven designs. ‘Al Mare is our interpretation of a classic, nautical stripe at home by the sea. Buttoned up and dressed down, it plays well with others,’ says Krista.
Ombre features what Krista describes as the most ‘Italian’ design of the collection, but ‘reinterpreted in a softer tonal palette.’
Linen combines the look of traditional flax linen with the resilience of high-performance materials, and Amore features a narrow banded stripe.
‘It’s named Amore because there’s not a stripe we haven’t met that we haven’t loved!’ Krista says.
Naturally, the colour range of The Italian Collection references the Aeolian Islands landscape, from the green caper bushes lining the roads of Salina, to intense bright sunsets caused by volcanic ash, and soft sorbet colours of Lipari’s main harbour.
‘We love the small details and textures in each of these fabrics. The crossweave creates a beautiful sense of movement and depth, the colours are unexpected, and we love the soft hand feel,’ says Krista.
The Italian Collection is available now across Basil Bangs’ quality range of umbrellas, outdoor chairs, cushions, bean bags, and more.
