The owners of Ammamead House worked with Flack Studio not once, not twice, but three times before asking the Melbourne-based design firm to style this Byron Bay getaway.
Founder David Flack — whose clientele ranges from Troye Sivan to the Ace Hotel Sydney — is known (and loved) around the world for his signature style, blending local modern art with bold hints of colour and natural materials.
All of these trademarks come to life in Ammamead House, a newly opened luxury holiday home accommodation.
After seeing the polished build come up for sale last year, the owners called in Flack Studio to help them turn the ‘blank canvas’ into a one-of-a-kind retreat, not far from the beach and Byron town.
It was a six-month project. New joinery helped set the tone for the interiors in the bar and kitchen, which opens onto an outdoor lounge area covered by red-striped awnings.
Pops of red and pink continue throughout, tied together with patterned rugs and vintage Italian lighting.
The resulting house’s collection of contemporary art is one of its most defining features. Bold original works by Australian artists like Tom Polo, Lindy Lee, Laith McGregor and Nadia Hernandez line the walls, contrasting with the refined simplicity of the sculptural architecture.
With four bedrooms — and four daybed zones — Ammamead House sleeps up to eight guests. There’s also a pool, outdoor shower, and an alfresco entertainment area with a barbecue, so visitors can enjoy sunny days out on the terrace. Flack’s long-time collaborators Florian Wild worked across the lush landscaping that completes the house’s transportive atmosphere.
The house still feels coastal, but the spin of Flack’s careful curation has given the sophisticated backdrop a newfound sense of character and warmth. If you ask us, it sounds like the perfect escape!
