Every year since 2016, the Darwin Aboriginal Art Fair (DDAF) has hosted Country to Couture: a runway show celebrating the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander fashion and textile designers.
Last year’s event was shaping up to be a showstopper, but alas, we all know what happened in 2020! After DAAF moved their event online, Country to Couture postponed its annual runway show to December 2020, eventually holding this at the George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens on Larrakia country.
For those of us who didn’t see the show live, a video production will be streamed on the Indigenous Fashion Projects Facebook page at 7pm January 22nd (tonight!). Featuring behind-the-scenes action, interviews with the designers, and footage of the live event, the broadcast will offer an intimate view of the stories behind each of the six collections.
The 30-minute show features contemporary designers Liandra Swim; Ikuntji Artists x Magpie Goose; Anindilyakwa Arts collective; Nobody Denim x Bima Wear; Warlukurlangu Aboriginal Corporation + North; and a collaboration between Ngali founder, Denni Francisco, artist Lindsay Malay from the Warmun Art Centre.
Country to Couture is supported by the Northern Territory Government via NT Major Events, and Country Road.
