After giving the public a sneak peek of an especially plush new armchair at this year’s Melbourne Design Week, Nau has just released a full range of modular sofas.

Nau — Cult’s in-house furniture and lighting brand — has again joined forces with prolific Sydney-based designer Adam Goodrum for the Billo collection.

The brief was to design a sofa that was versatile, welcoming, and super comfortable. This prompted Adam to take inspiration from his deep appreciation for vintage Italian sofas, which are famous for their timeless elegance and quality.

‘I wanted to capture the essence of those classic forms while infusing them with a modern touch, ensuring they meet contemporary needs and preferences,’ Adam says.

The resulting sofa system features relaxed tailoring and pillowy, voluptuous forms that embrace you with open arms as you sink into the seat. The modular pieces range from two-seat sofas to corner modules, and playful ottomans, allowing for endless configurations to suit different spaces.

Stepping away from his traditionally geometric aesthetic, Adam says it took several iterations and plenty of trial and error to bring the organic silhouettes of the Billo collection to life.

‘One of the main challenges was stepping out of my comfort zone. We started with the armchair, the most complex piece, and used its design elements to inform the other modules, ensuring a cohesive and versatile collection,’ he adds.

‘This has been by far the most complex project I’ve undertaken at Nau, but the end result is something I’m very happy with. I hope people will feel the same way and enjoy having it in their homes as much as I do. Personally, I want one for my own home!’
