After moving from Melbourne’s inner north to her first home on the Mornington Peninsula in 2021, photographer Kate Shanasy started capturing the region’s string of beautiful beaches.
It was still a particularly dark time of on-again-off-again lockdowns, but she had a whole new 5km radius and the coastal neighbourhood of Blairgowrie to explore with her camera.
‘Every single day I looked forward to the sun going down so I could walk across to the dunes and just take in all the scenery, and just take in all the scenery; the tides, the light, the colour of the light, the tides, the intensity of the ocean’s waves,’ Kate says.
‘I’d walk the same tracks each day and I started to discover these fascinating nuances in nature. I couldn’t believe I used to miss these moments living in the city.’
This daily exercise continued throughout last year and has since evolved into a full photography exhibition ‘Dunes’ — which opens at Ocean Beach Yoga in Sorrento tonight!
Along with the dunes of Blairgowrie, she also photographed back beaches as far Rye and Portsea across the 25 beautiful images. From dreamy honeycomb sunsets in the colder seasons to beachgoers overlooking rockpools in summer, Kate’s nostalgic photos will transport you to some of Melbourne’s most pristine and beautiful coastlines. And they’re all available to buy as prints!
‘Dunes’ opens tonight from 5pm-6:30pm, June 2 until June 30. Shop the collection online here.
