After years of curating interiors, the Hobart-based designers behind This Vacant Space found themselves struggling to source the right homewares that delivered a genuine finishing touch to their projects — especially ones that had been designed in Tasmania.
Already business partners in their design studio, Kate Moss and Rose Kiselev decided to fill this gap in the market themselves, launching their new brand, Karo.
‘Designing interiors has taught us that every space has its own personality, and that feels especially true in Tasmania, where so many homes come with their own history, quirks and character,’ co-founder Kate says.
Karo’s first collection introduces a series of playful timber mirrors. Each one can stand alone as a decorative piece, with the additional option of purchasing a Buddy Cabinet in oak or walnut for built-in storage.
Toeing the line between furniture and custom joinery, the range provides a considered off-the-shelf option that elevates a room’s function and form, without the cost or commitment of a fully bespoke design.
‘Not everyone is renovating an entire home, engaging an interior designer or commissioning custom joinery, but that doesn’t mean the smaller, everyday pieces in a home should feel like an afterthought.’
With an eye on longevity, Karo pieces are all crafted from solid timber, ensuring they can easily complement a mix of spaces and styles.
‘We didn’t want the pieces to feel too tied to one particular interior style, or to overpower the room around them,’ Kate adds, noting this is the first of many products to come.
‘We hope this is the beginning of a much broader collection, but we want to build it with intention. We do have a folder of future product ideas labelled “wine fuelled designs”, so we’ll let you know if they come to fruition!’
