Tim Ross loves motels. This year he made a show about them, performed in motels all over the country. And now he’s made a whole book about them! MOTEL – Images of Australia on Holidays is a nostalgic trip through motel life in Australia between the 1950s and 1989. ‘Many of us remember the summer ritual of packing up the car with half the stuff we owned and heading for our chosen “spot” in often incident-packed road trips,’ says Tim – central to those memorable journeys was the motel.

Trawling through the National Archives of Australia to source images for this new book, Tim has created a time capsule back to a when everything moved a little slower, and going on holidays felt a little more special.

‘Giving these important moments in our collective past a chance to be seen by a new audience is something that I’m very excited about’, Tim tells. ‘I suggest that people make themselves a thermos of instant coffee, grab those twin-packs of biscuits and back the old station wagon all the way down memory lane.’
