Duality is described as a ‘blind date between 50 Melbourne creatives.’ The brainchild of Melbourne photographer Shannyn Higgins, the experiment pairs anonymous words from 25 Melbourne writers with 25 artists. Each writer is asked to submit a brief unpublished phrase, which is then delivered to artists to use as inspiration along with a blank archival sheet to draw or paint on.

Among those participating in the project are comedian Judith Lucy, musician Courtney Barnett, writer Claire G. Coleman, designer-illustrator Beci Orpin, illustrator Oslo Davis, painter Sarah Kelk, artist Kim Hyunji, musician Gretta Ray, writer Madeleine Dore, and painter Olana Janfa.

The results of this experiment are being displayed in an interactive exhibition experience. For now, the works and creative pairings are a secret, even to the participating creatives, but all will be revealed at Duality’s launch.

Shannyn has photographed and filmed a candid behind-the-scenes look 50 creatives in their respective workspaces to complement the project. These portraits will feature in a limited-edition coffee table book and will also form part of the exhibition.

This event is the third iteration of the Duality experiment, returning after a four-year hiatus. Previous events have occurred in Melbourne as well as Vancouver.

Duality is part of the Melbourne Writers Festival running August 30th – September 8th.
