Brian Cheung, Isolation, And The Ocean

7th June, 2018

The Melbourne-based artist shows a new body of work developed during several residences by the water.

In DREICH at Off The Kerb in Collingwood, Brian Cheung looks out to the water as his subject matter. The artist sees this show as a visual manifestation of his mood and creative process, presented through the lens of a repetitive yet constantly changing subject matter.

Brian spent almost a year at different artist residencies, from  mid-2017 to early 2018, seeking out the specific programs based on their proximity to the ocean. One residency was on a remote island in the middle of an archipelago, while another was beside a lighthouse… all were very isolated!

Loosely translated to ‘dreary’ or ‘grim’, Brian’s choice of exhibition name can give us an insight into his state of mind during the experiences. ‘The isolation wasn’t always comfortable’, the artist admits, ‘but it had a lasting effect on my work.’

Magnificently lifelike, the scale of these paintings is vast – a reflection of the never-ending-ness of the ocean itself, an expanse that simultaneously incites peace and anxiety.
