Wona Bae and Charlie Lawler were at the forefront of the plant ‘craze’ when they opened their light-filled Collingwood space in 2013. Filled to the bursting point with a wide and unique variety of indoor and outdoor plants, there was nothing else like it in Melbourne at the time. But Loose Leaf was much more than just another plant store, and Wona and Charlie’s connection to nature is more of a philosophical approach to life cycles than your run-of-the-mill green thumb.
Exploring the intrinsic relationship between humans and nature, Wona and Charlie present Primitive Matter. The ongoing exhibition takes elements of nature outside their organic context, recontexualising the plant matter in a built environment to take on an otherworldly form. The works are informed by Wona and Charlie’s understanding of natural cycles. Textural and layered, the installation is complemented by an immersive sound piece by artist Martin Kay.
