Shopping

There’s always been a big demand for vintage furniture, but these days we’re spoilt for choice in where and how we find our vintage gems.

Previously looking for a retro piece might have meant hours spent scouring eBay, estate sales and overwhelming markets. Now you can leave the work to the online re-sellers and IRL showrooms, filled with designer pieces from Italy and beyond!

Whether you’re looking for a modular sofa that transports you back to the ’70s or mid-century dining chairs filled with stories of the past, here are 11 of our favourite Australian stores and sellers who you can count on for the coolest vintage furniture and homewares!

Curated Spaces

No list of vintage furniture sellers and shops would be complete without a mention of Curated Spaces. Pip Newell started the store on Instagram back in 2017, and it’s since become one of Australia’s most popular online platforms for vintage furniture and homewares, selling items from a brilliant network of sellers and on consignment.

There’s a constant stream of new stock to browse and recent gems include an amazing Missoni sofa in the brand’s signature stripes, alongside a glamorous vintage marble table that could be from Gatsby’s mansion!

CCSS

CCSS is our go-to for vintage European pieces like the iconic Togo couches and mid-century lighting, sourcing most of their covetable stock from Italy, France, Sweden and Denmark. The store has also recently set up a new showroom in Abbotsford, giving vintage fans the chance to see special pieces IRL.

And they’ve been saving up some special finds for the store’s opening, including luxuriously soft velvet Saporiti Confidential sofa from the 70s, and a completely restored set of 4 Giotto Stoppino Dining Chairs in Cognac Leather.

LH Design Hub

Leah Holt looks everywhere for LH Design Hub‘s timeless, one-off pieces that ‘get better with age’, hitting up op-shops, auctions, Gumtree, eBay, Facebook Marketplace, and her own network of friends and family. She’s even found some cult-classics Cesca chairs, stamped ‘made in Italy’ on the side of road in Melbourne – and she takes sourcing requests!

She’s currently ‘obsessing over’ a pair of charming burl bedside tables, an Easy Chair by Illum Wikkelsoø, and an antique wooden dresser in her collections.

Modern Times

Modern Times‘ expert team handpicks their vintage products on trips to Europe, bringing back the very best pieces – and the stories behind them!

The Melbourne showroom and gallery space is refreshed every fortnight with newly restored pieces, but their current top picks include a one-of-a-kind slate mosaic coffee table by Dutch artist Paul Kingma, and a 70s concrete dining table with a cantilevered glass top by the Saporiti brothers. Imagine the dinner party tales it could tell if tables could talk…

Mood Objects

Counsellor-turned-vintage hunter Kalu Edmunds started Mood Objects a few years ago, and loves how sentimental and ’emotional’ vintage furniture can be. The buyer has an eye (and the network!) for finding dream pieces like a green velvet sofa by Alessandro Bechhi for Giovannetti and colourful Murano glass wall lights imported from Italy.

Kalu is also a part of Curated Space’s passionate community of vintage lovers, who’s been selling through the platform for almost four years!

Saucd

Saucd originally started in Brisbane in 2019, as an answer to a gap in the market they saw for sustainable, fun and affordable pieces for the home.

Now they have a Sydney base too, selling their one-of-a-kind goods that can be ‘insanely expensive to buy new’ like couches, dining tables and striking chairs. They also have some ‘exciting new homewares’ on the way in the new year in line with the current eclectic maximalism trend!

Juliet’s Balcony

Sydney-based art director and set decorator Oleh Sokolovsky opened Juliet’s Balcony out the front of his place in 2010 as a Saturday morning side hustle, selling mid-century pieces by Australian designers like Parker and Fler.

Now operating from a showroom in the inner west, the store has become known as a one-stop shop for seating by master Danish designer Hans Wegner (having earned the nickname ‘Wegner World’ by regular customers) alongside designs from Sweden, Finland and Germany!

Ma House Supply Store

Another local fave is Ma House Supply Store, run by Ben Mooney. He’s always had an obsession with objects and furniture and over the the years he developed a knack for sourcing these gems, scouring marketplaces online for eclectic pieces, or snapping up vintage finds at antique bazaars.

Earlier this year he opened up his own store, inviting others to shop his curated collection of old and new things for their own homes.

Grandfather’s Axe

Melbourne showroom Grandfather’s Axe knows just how special vintage furniture is, with an amazing workshop team who restore every piece before it lands in their Collingwood store.

Ed Klein founded the business from his garage in 2007, before operating in Northcote for about a decade – where he also met his wife when she was a customer! Now the couple are among a team of 10 who source and sell Scandinavian pieces, alongside local mid-century finds at a mix of affordable and luxury prices.
