Strong, beautiful, solid and Australian-made are not words frequently used to describe flatpack furniture, unless you’re talking about the new Nami range by nau, Cult’s in-house design brand.
Designed by Sydney-based furniture designer Tom Fereday, Nami (meaning ‘wave’ in Japanese) encompasses eight pieces made in NSW from sustainably certified solid timber.
Four of Nami’s products (Round Dining Table, Rectangle Dining Table, Coffee Table, and Bed) are made from flat-packing solid timber – a unique and sustainably-minded solution allowing lower-impact delivery and installation even in small, challenging spaces. Tables and beds can be simply assembled or disassembled with a single allen key, resulting in an incredibly strong assembly truly designed to last a lifetime.
‘The Nami collection began as an experimentation into flat-packing furniture – the idea of its value,’ says Tom. ‘We really wanted to test that concept and really explain that you can have incredibly strong, furniture pieces that appropriately consider how people live today.’
Also in the collection is the Nami Sofa, Armchair, and Ottoman that each adopt an equally sculptural and solid form. These inviting, lozenge-shaped designs are available in a selection of upholstery options, which flow seamlessly onto a timber base.
Nami is Tom’s second collaboration under nau’s unique business model fostering the next generation of Australian designers. ‘What makes nau so unique is the fact we work with Australian designers, but we actually take their products from concept to product,’ says Richard Munao, founder and managing director of Cult. ‘What that allows is for Australian designers and creatives to be more creative, and focus their attention on creating the best designs for nau to take to market.’
Nami is one of several new ranges in nau’s 2021 collection alongside Australian-made furniture and lighting pieces from fellow local designers Adam Goodrum, Kate Stokes, and Adam Cornish.
