It's no secret we're huge fans of NZ-based design duo Douglas and Bec, so we were pretty excited to learn that they've just released a new version of their super popular 'Angle' table lamp, in a 'Make Your Own' kit! The GENIUS of offering this DIY option, is that it comes in a flat-packed parcel, which significantly reduces shipping costs to Australia, and has also brought the lamp price down to a very accessible NZ$289.00! SO clever.
'I have admired Max Lamb's directions for making a chair - I love how he is so comfortable as a designer that he feels that he can reveal his methods' explains Rebecca when asked how the 'Make Your Own' lamp idea came about. 'Now that we are further along in our design journey, we felt that we could attempt something that is in a similar vein. I really like that the lamp is not too serious - it is playful and fun. I agonise as a designer about striving for constant improvement and trying to be extra clever. I love that this lamp is simple and very low-tech'.
The Make Your Own Angle Lamp comes as a kit set in interchangeable colour schemes. Simply choose your linen shade, cord and base colour.... then assemble the lamp yourself! Each kit comes with all parts for the lamp of your choice, clear instructions and an allen key - it's easy to assemble by hand. They're available to buy online here.
In case you need a little reminder, Douglas and Bec is run by Father / Daughter team Douglas Snelling and Rebecca Dowie, who, along with Rebecca's husband Paul, run a busy design studio and popular homewares store in Posonby, Auckland. 2014 is already looking like it'll be a big year for Douglas and Bec - due to the incredible growth of their studio work and custom lighting projects they will be relocating to a bigger studio next year. They also have plans for a new collaborative retail concept - opening very soon! OH my... I think 2014 might finally be the year I get my act together and plan a trip to NZ! It's LONG overdue...!

I haven’t received your posts for the last 3 days. Help!!!
Have I dropped of the mailing list or is there a problem with your posts?
Please help, miss you terribly.
I LOVE Douglas and Bec’s lamps they are just AMAZING!! I recently purchased 2 and will be back for more!! Really friendly staff!! Nothing is a problem.
Where are you all living and working that you think $289 is a great price for a lamp that you then have to assemble yourself? Clearly I am in the wrong field of work! Its a beautiful lamp but let’s have some reality please.
Have to agree w/Michaela and Priscilla Rule. $289 is overreaching and pretentious for such a simplistic product.
I LOVE the lamps! The choice to change the colours is brilliant. Is this Douglas Snelling related to THE Douglas Snelling of the mid century web chairs etc, do you know, Lucy?
