Melbourne not-for-profit organisation The Beautiful Bunch has been delivering gorgeous floral arrangements and bouquets across the city for nearly four years.

But it’s not just any floral delivery service. The Beautiful Bunch works specifically with young women from refugee backgrounds experiencing employment barriers, providing a supportive work and training program that teaches a combination of foundational floristry skills, computer literacy and business administration skills.

Now, the registered charity group has launched a new initiative to support young Palestinian women who have recently arrived from Gaza. Girls from Gaza is a subscription service offering a selection of fresh, seasonal blooms arranged lovingly by the newly-arrived Palestinian trainees. At $50 a bunch, all of the proceeds directly support their continued employment.

‘We have been working with a number of grassroots community organisations since late last year to coordinate a recruitment round focused on supporting newly-arrived young women from Gaza,’ The Beautiful Bunch founder Jane Marx explains.

‘Whilst relieved to be here, they are lacking much of the support people would expect new arrivals to receive in Australia (such as) Centrelink, Medicare, and a caseworker to help them settle successfully.’

The new trainees have been living in Australia for the past two to six months and work two days a week at the Brunswick East floral studio, alongside ten other young women from refugee and migrant backgrounds.

‘These young women have survived the unthinkable,’ Jane adds. ‘Trying to leave was incredibly difficult for each of them, and with many loved ones still trapped there, the girls tell us all the time that their hearts and minds are still in Gaza.’

If you’d like to support the Girls from Gaza program, all you need to do is buy a bunch of flowers! The Beautiful Bunch offer same-day delivery across Melbourne, and your bouquet will come with a personalised message from the trainees. The subscription service can be cancelled at any time — but if you can afford it, a two to three month subscription is recommended to continue providing steady work for these young women.
