Waste reduction trailblazers Seljak Brand and Five Mile Radius are a match made in sustainable design heaven… But on earth, the neighbouring labels have more than an environmental philosophy in common – they now share a studio!
Sam Seljak and Clare Kennedy of Five Mile Radius project managed the build – enlisting Clare’s partner Jack Hamilton Joinery to help complete the fit-out. The glass-fronted shopfront in Brisbane’s Highgate Hill contains a showroom and gallery at the front and a co-working space at the back, the latter of which is frequented by a collection of creatives: Sophie Vaughan of Studio Gentle, furniture designer Tom Wade of Plain Store, photographers Aimee Catt and Anwyn Howarth and Marilena Hewitt of Platypus Publication. It’s a beehive of creative cross-pollination!
’We applied circular economy principles to the fit-out – from designing for disassembly, sourcing secondhand where possible, and using Five Mile Radius’ waste terrazzo made from construction by-product,’ explains Sam Seljak, co-founder of the recycled wool blanket company. And she’s not kidding!
The desks were made using plywood and cypress pine from Austral Plywoods – which sources all its timber from plantations in South East Queensland – while the board room table is topped with Five Mile Radius’ signature waste terrazzo on a reclaimed hardwood base. Similarly, the organic-based paint used on the walls and ceiling is manufactured on the Sunshine Coast, the front door signage was hand-painted by a friend, and the office chairs were sourced secondhand from the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads. Even the planters are made from recycled plastic, courtesy of Mr Kitly!
The women plan on hosting talks, collaboration launches, pop-ups material workshops + more in the future. We love!
