In a year that had very few upsides for anyone (let alone the arts), one silver lining was the heightened focus on the shoestring budget much of the industry operates on. Creative professionals who are often thrust out of political focus were suddenly centre stage, drawing attention to their chronically undervalued professions.

Photographer Benny Capp’s new exhibition Unscene Sets investigates our local industry even deeper – flipping the limelight to focus on the unseen people behind television and film sets. These designers, decorators and curators are masters of mise-en-scene, creating ambience and visual personality for every TV project – bringing worlds and characters to life while remaining invisible themselves.

Benny set aside of a slice of his studio for each of these set dressers to personally style in their own aesthetic. The subsequent setting they created are a reflection of its maker, rendering the exhibition a fusion of portraiture and self-portraiture. We love it!
