TDF Talks With Director Of The NGV, Tony Ellwood AM

TDF Talks @Mercedes me

Since accepting his position as the Director of the National Gallery of Victoria in 2012, Tony Ellwood has been responsible for a major overhaul of the NGV’s programming, marketing and special projects.

He has led a diverse and significant program of world-class exhibitions and events over the last seven years, transforming the NGV into the most-visited gallery in Australia.

We were thrilled to have the opportunity to chat with Tony earlier this month, and capture this inspiring podcast conversation!

Today’s podcast episode is brought to you by Mercedes me, and it bookends an incredible series of live talks at the concept store in Melbournes CBD (you can see some pics here.)

Tony Ellwood , Director of the National Gallery of Victoria,  sat down with me – and our biggest crowd yet! – to delve into his background, reflect on his leadership approach at the NGV, and share a little about what’s in store for the gallery next, including the major new arts precinct recently announced by the State government that will be a game-changer for Melbourne.

All our podcasts come with pictures. When listening via iTunes/the Apple podcasts app, enjoy viewing relevant photographs and clicking through links while you listen!

Notes + Links

The National Gallery of Victoria just last week opened their latest Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition, bringing together China’s ancient terracotta warriors, alongside new works by Chinese contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang – the show Is on until October 13th.

You can check out the NGV’s dynamic program of exhibitions here – and you can follow them on Instagram @ngvmelbourne.

We had a chance to go behind-the-scenes of their incredible Van Gogh And The Seasons exhibition (2017) to make this insightful film (and learn about how some individual paintings have their own minder!!).

Other huge successes during Tony’s tenure include the ground-breaking The House of Dior exhibition (see our film here) and the amazing MoMA exhibition last year, which you can see more about here.

Tony gives us the scoop on the new NGV Contemporary, which will form a major new arts precinct and be a game-changer for the NGV and the city as a whole!

This is our 29th TDF Talks podcast, check out all the others here.

Next, we travel to Sydney for TDF Talks at Fisher & Paykel’s Experience Centre. You can book tickets for Tim Ross and Penelope Seidler’s talks here.

Mercedes me is a collaborative space in Melbourne’s CBD, where café culture meets Mercedes-Benz lifestyle. Stay up to date with their varied program of events by following @mercedesmestore.melbourne.
