The highly-anticipated annual Dulux Colour Awards reward projects that use colour as a hero feature in some of Australia and New Zealand’s most forward-thinking design projects. This is the 33rd year of the iconic award, seeing 435 entries across 6 categories whittled down to just 114 finalists.

‘There has been a shift away from greys and cooler neutrals which have dominated interiors in previous years, with nature-based warm hues, such as beiges, terracotta and caramels coming to the fore,’ says Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux ColourPlanning, and Communications Manager. As far as dominant colours in residential interiors, Andrea explains the tonal blues have been a popular choice, ‘from azure through to dark navy’, while greens continue to add ‘sophistication, character and a sense of quiet luxury.’

Renowned Melbourne-based architects Kennedy Nolan have made some bold moves, highlighting shades of green in some of their latest projects. A soft eucalyptus green elevates wood-paneled walls in the Sandy Point House, mimicking the tones of lush bushland welcomed in through large windows. Similarly, you can’t miss that dramatic pickle green staircase fearlessly piercing the otherwise pared-back Caroline House, whereas a softer sage green is used on the utility wall in the kitchen of the Kagan House.

Alwill Interiors have gone all out in a surprising room of the Peppertree House by Luigi Rosselli Architects, opting for mint blue and pastel pink (Millennial pink – the trend that will not retire!) on the walls, countertops and even floors of two separate bathroom spaces.

Californian retro vibes reign supreme in the Ivanhoe Residence by Flack Studio, where 70s and 80s-inspired silhouettes are kept contemporary with tones of blue, a cheeky turquoise wall offset by a *slightly* more sensible navy blue corrugated iron kitchen structure.

Winning projects for the Dulux Colour Awards 2019 will be assessed by a panel of industry leaders, including Rosa Coy, Director of Coy Yiontis Architects; Mardi Doherty, Director of Doherty Design Studio; Simon Farrell-Green, Editor of HOME New Zealand magazine; Matt Gibson, Director of Matt Gibson Architecture + Design; and Carole Whiting, Director of Carole Whiting Interiors + Design. Look out for the winners announcement in early May!
