Melbourne designer Jessie Willow Tucker is a multi-talented maker with a varied creative career spanning fine art, textile design, illustration and design within the commercial fashion industry. She has also successfully designed and produced her own range of lingerie (I find this amazing!), and more recently, a homewares range.
At present Jessie works part-time as a women's sleepwear designer, and freelances in textile design and illustration. However, not known stick to just one creative outlet at any given time (!!), Jessie's latest project has been the development of this striking range of hand painted earrings entitled 'Darling', for Edition X.
'These earrings were inspired by a lifetime of collecting and wearing large
and/or kooky earrings, particularly anything with fruit or parrots' explains Jessie. 'Recently I found a dusty box of earrings from the '80s in an antique barn, and bought a few pairs. They soon became my staple wardrobe. I thought it would be fun to make some, they are like little bits of art for your ears'.
Jessie's earrings are handmade in balsa wood, making them super lightweight to wear. 'I cut the shapes out of balsa wood by hand, and sand them until the edges are smooth and rounded' explains Jessie. Each timber base is then primed and meticulously handpainted before being finished in a high gloss for durability and shine. The hooks are made of sterling silver.
This project marks Jessie's first foray into jewellery design. 'It's been lots of fun and I'm definitely going to make more big and outrageous jewellery!' she says. Do pop over and check out the full range online at Edition X!
