The first (and perhaps most obvious!) step in any bedroom refresh is to declutter.

Before you rush out to buy new pieces, it’s important to take inventory of what items you already have, what you’re loving, and what you’re not.

This holds the key to determining your personal style and vibe for the year ahead. From here, you can build on your existing hero pieces and favourite trinkets, or decide if your bedroom needs a total transformation using our tips below!

Don’t be afraid of colour drenching and contrasting hues

Since your bedroom is a space just for you, it’s one of the rooms in the house where you can really have fun with colour. Blue is a great calming hue that can easily be layered upon, using something like Tint’s Monsoon Season on the walls, before sourcing matching blue curtains or floor coverings.

In our dream bedroom moodboard above, we’ve avoided white entirely, and gone for deep burgundy bedding and Weave’s Silvio rug as our neutral colours, instead of your typical grey or beige. These provide a vibrant contrast that really pops against the muted backdrop!

Use artwork as your anchor

Speaking of colour, if you’re ever struggling to decide on colour for your home, a great place to start is to find an artwork you love, and use that to inspire your palette.

If you envision a soft landscape painting in your bedroom, it’ll pair perfectly with earthy shades like sage, olive green, and timber furniture like the Balmain Bed Base from Koala.

But we especially love how a beautiful abstract artwork like Afternoon Fields by Caroline Collom can help tie a space together, by echoing the key colours in the room, without feeling too overwhelming.

Texture is key for a lived-in look

A good bedroom should feel warm and inviting, so mixing and matching different textures is a must for getting that cosy, lived-in look. A plush wool rug under the bed is a fail-safe addition, while a comfy armchair can create the perfect reading nook. The Irene Sideboard by Lifely is classic with its oak-style finish, or you could add a modern metallic touch with the Volume Side Table from Trit House.

Use soft lighting to set the mood

No bedroom is complete without some atmospheric lighting. The Akari 26A pendant light from In Good Company is the perfect centrepiece, offering soft and diffused lighting overhead for the ultimate relaxed retreat. Or, invest in a good lamp like the Inka 1 Light Table Lamp by Beacon Lighting — it’s functional for reading in bed, and looks great too!
