This Interior Designer's Pastel Bedroom Is A Perfectly Serene Sanctuary

Interior designer Alison Lewis’ bedroom is a cosy and cohesive sanctuary — much like the rest of her biscuit-coloured California bungalow.

Having filled the once-monochromatic Melbourne house with soft textures and tonal hues, she drew inspiration from the calming hues of nature to create a pastel bedroom.

Styled with luxurious bed linen from Abode Living, the space is the perfect retreat to come home to at the end of a long day.

‘The patterned quilt cover and pillowcases give the space a bit of pizzaz and encourages your eye to bounce around the room to take it all in,’ Alison says.

Alison’s advice for styling a bedroom is to ‘pick a colour scheme, and stick to it’.

From the tonal living room to the sunny backyard, there’s a lot to love about Alison Lewis’ renovated California bungalow in Northcote.

But the founder of Alison Lewis Interiors says her main bedroom is the understated hero of the inviting family home.

The design all started with a feeling. ‘I wanted to be enveloped by cosiness, warmth and perhaps most importantly, I wanted it to feel like a sanctuary when I walked in there at the end of the day,’ Alison says.

To create this cocoon-like feel, she came up with a palette that reflected natural hues, cloaking the room in pastel-painted timber panels. She also custom-designed an upholstered and curved bedhead, with rounded timber side tables, helping to break up the room’s rectangular geometry.

This layered textural backdrop is something Alison wanted to contrast in her bedlinen selections from Australian family-owned business Abode Living.

She opted to add a custom satin stitch to a crisp cotton sheet in a soft blue colourway, paired with a slate grey quilt cover featuring a circular jacquard pattern — reminiscent of a ‘moon rising over water’.

‘When working with textures, I love mixing materiality to add interest and friction, so your eye can take in all the gloriousness of the space through various focal points,’ she says. ‘Bedlinen is all about layering. You need to layer to give your bedroom volume, which is key to making it feel sophisticated, cosy, and warm.’

‘The patterned bedcover and divine sheets provide a smoothness to the chunkiness of the bedhead and grain of the bedside tables, bringing the space to life.’

Alison says her love of travel and staying in well-designed hotels also inspired the look and feel of the cohesive bedroom.

‘Travel is such a great source of design inspiration,’ she adds. ‘Good hotel beds look like you could just jump into them and be engulfed by their softness and I love how this linen achieves that.’

The slightly sheer linen drapes, a dreamy landscape painting, and a set of matching patterned pillow cases provide the perfect finishing touches!
