The elegant period terraces in Carlton North are such a distinctive part of Melbourne’s inner-city streetscape.

Nestled into a particularly quiet pocket of the area, dubbed Princes Hill, you’ll find a row of six 1884-built homes where 221 Richardson Street has just been listed for sale.

From the outside, the single-fronted Victoria shares many similarities to its neighbouring properties, united by their quaint facades, with brick arches overhead and cast-iron lacework details. But inside, it features a rooftop deck and modern interiors that set it apart from the rest.

Owner and architect Emma Tulloch renovated the property a few years ago, working within its ‘cottage-sized footprint’.

She extended out to the boundaries and built upwards to ‘capture a view of the surrounding rooftops and a cheeky view of a portion of the city skyline’. This made way for a new second storey, a sweeping void in the living room, in addition to a staircase leading to a terrace on the roof. And it’s accessed by a dramatic glass door that lifts upwards!

‘I will miss the rooftop deck the most,’ Emma now that she’s listed her home of 11 years.

‘It has so many uses, from an outdoor movie spot to the perfect laundromat and everything in between. To be able to open the door and sit amongst the rooftops watching the sun rise or set is so special.’

Floor-to-ceiling windows and skylights fill every room with natural light, and the original Baltic timber floorboards have been retained in the two bedrooms at the front of the house.

Emma describes the house as a ‘little jewel in a perfect position’. It’s located right on the edge of Princes Park — where she and her whippet London have enjoyed daily walks and impromptu picnics.

Plus, with the CBD, Lygon Street and Rathdowne Street Village also all nearby, Emma says the lucky buyer will never have to walk far to find a morning coffee and a pastry!

221 Richardson Street, Carlton North, VIC is for sale with Mark Verrocchi and Bella Cortese from Nelson Alexander and will go to auction Saturday March 2 at 2:30pm.
