After returning to Melbourne from Berlin, the owners of this Jan Juc house decided it was time to trade the city lifestyle for the coast.

Owners Susie Meagher and Richard Muntz and their three daughters had been living with the family’s 91-year-old grandmother — Peggy Muntz — while overseas, so when they saw 18 Broadbeach Road come up for sale, it was the ‘perfect’ opportunity to create ‘two homes’ on the sprawling block — a five minute drive from Bells Beach, one of Victoria’s best surf breaks.

‘We are the second owners,’ Susie says. ‘The family who [originally] built the house have five kids, and like us, enjoyed multigenerational living.’

But they’ve still put their own spin on the house over the past six-and-half years they’ve lived at the property, which features seven bedrooms spread across the sprawling home, guest wing, self-contained cottage and studio.

In the main residence, they created a tonal kitchen, updated the bathrooms and made cosmetic changes throughout with the help of Prudence Caroline Oliveri who curated the modern coastal style of the interiors. A glamorous stone fireplace is paired with rustic finishes and warm timber details throughout, while the secluded main bedroom captures views of the sunrise from the upper level.

The former garage was converted into a light-filled guest wing with its own open-plan living kitchen and dining area, that’s been a dedicated sanctuary for Peggy.

Susie says they completely re-landscaped the seasonal gardens designed by Ocean Road Landscaping, in addition to updating the surrounds of the undeniably large (and dreamy!) pool. There’s also a basketball court and a rustic shipping container repurposed as a home office, with views of over the lush gardens.

With outdoor decks that make the most of the property’s northern sun during the day, and a fire pit to retreat by night, the family say it’s been a ‘special’ place to call home.

‘[We’re going to miss] the views over the town and ocean; the upper deck to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks; the sounds of the ocean; and the space to entertain mates over a long weekend,’ Susie adds.

If you’ve been looking for a sign from the universe to make that sea change, this could be it!

18 Broadbeach Road, Jan Juc is listed for private sale with Shaun O’Callaghan from One Agency Surf Coast.
