This charming Fitzroy North home is believed to have once been the local stables for its idyllic street, according to the owner’s neighbour. These days though, it’s a beautifully contemporary home that’s been designed with family in mind.
Long-time Fitzroy locals Cate and Andrew snapped up the property at 32 Coleman Street back in 2008.
‘We found this house on a cute one-way street smack bang between Edinburgh gardens and the Fitzroy Pool and thought we’d be very happy living here,’ Cate says. ‘Luckily the auction fell in our favour and we’ve had 15 very happy years in our home.’
The couple engaged the help of Pipkorn Kilpatrick (where Cate also works alongside her sister Jane and friend Anna) for two separate updates that have allowed the house to evolve with them over the years.
It was originally ‘yellow and full of tasseled pendants’ so they initially gave the interiors a refresh, while also updating the kitchen, living and bathroom. And after having their two kids, Milla and Max, they gave it a ‘major’ makeover that transformed the modest, one-bedroom home into a functional family home for four.
But now that their children are growing up, they’ve listed their beloved inner-city sanctuary in order to upsize.
The charming period facade conceals the contemporary renovation and a much-needed second floor. Upstairs is complete with a study, spacious bedrooms that make the most of the home’s treetop views, in addition to a main bedroom with a sunny rooftop terrace!
They also cleverly repurposed some of the home’s original materials in the new ways, using the red bricks from the demolished chimney in the courtyard, while the backyard’s established Ash tree guided the relaxing interior palette of timber.
‘The kids think it’s cool how their bedroom feels like it’s perched in the trees and we adore our bedroom aspect with its view to the deck and the Edinburgh gardens treetops beyond,’ Cate adds.
‘And we love our area, we spend lots of time in Edinburgh Gardens, which is welcoming and full of life and we all make the most of the tennis courts, basketball court, footy grounds and the playgrounds when the kids were younger.’
Plus with the impressive line-up of bustling cafes, restaurants, bars, galleries and shops, Cate says the home has everything you need to ‘remain perfectly content’ in this inner-city bubble!
32 Coleman Street, Fitzroy North is listed with Charles Atkins at Jellis Craig and will go to auction at 10am March 25.
