Heidelberg (located 11 kilometres north-east of Melbourne’s CBD) is home to many wonderful 1970s properties, including this five-bedroom house currently for sale.
The house was designed by Sol Sapir, an acclaimed building designer responsible for over 100 blocks of flats in Melbourne, including several beachfront towers along Beaconsfield Parade and The Esplanade according to Built Heritage.
For the past 12 years, it’s been the home of Donna and Joe Sirianni, who raised their four children here. Unsurprisingly it’s been their perfect family home, affording each of the children their own large bedrooms, in addition to a study. There’s also numerous living spaces, many of which spill out onto balconies and the home’s extensive entertaining areas.
The property remains in near original condition thanks to Donna and Joe’s proud custodianship of the home – rather than renovate, they have mainly focussed on outdoor landscaping completed by Sinatra Murphy. ‘We have tried to retain the house in its original state as much as possible, as it’s a fine example of ‘70s architecture,’ says Joe. ‘The timber ceilings and timber wood work are a lovely feature and are a fine example of the craftsmanship of buildings in that era.’
Of course, one can’t talk about this home without mentioning its many entertaining features. As well as the pool area there’s an additional pool house, indoor gardens, a cellar, and rumpus/billiards room with a bar.
The house is located near the banks of the Yarra River and the Main Yarra Trail, which the family have been fortunate to walk the dog along every day. ‘It’s a lovely rural setting with kangaroos, rabbits and an abundance of bird life just outside your front door,’ Joe says.
Donna and Joe’s children are now grown up, so they’re moving into this next phase of life, in a new house they’ve built in Red Hill. We hope the new owners love this Heidelberg home’s ‘70s glam feel as much as we do!
