When writer Rachel Power moved into this home, her son was six months old. Now he is 17, and it is time for the family to start a new chapter of their lives…and an opportunity for you to move in

This home comes with a special history, as it was part of a co-housing community established with a group of friends in the 1970s. While the communal veggie patch is no longer, and fences have now been introduced between the properties, Rachel promises that ‘whoever moves in is guaranteed to have wonderful, generous neighbours on all sides.’

‘Whoever moves in is guaranteed to have wonderful, generous neighbours on all sides’ – Rachel Power. 

This Thornbury home started life as a part of an informal co-housing community established by a group of friends in the 1970s, who bought neighbouring houses, and knocked down their back fences! While the backyard is now fenced off, current owner Rachel Power explains that a strong neighbourhood vibe continues. The Smith St home is now up for sale, and Rachel reflects on living here from 17 years with her family.

When Rachel moved in, the house next door was ‘a group house and various friends of ours were living there, including musicians Emma Tonkin, Liam Freeman, Ria Soemardjo and Clare Bowditch.’ The backyard was a big open space of shared veggie patched and chooks. She explains ‘there are fences between the properties now, but whoever moves in is guaranteed to have wonderful, generous neighbours on all sides.’ 

Rachel and her family renovated their home, with her partner Alistair re-designed the space by adapting the run down lean-to and reconfiguring the backyard to accommodate a bungalow, laundry, bathroom, separate toilet and extra bedroom. The overall character of this quaint Victorian weatherboard has been retained, though, with all of the original fireplaces and ornate features. 

The family will be sad to say goodbye to the vibrant, village life of Thornbury (especially their favourite cafes Short Round, Cafe Flo and Brother Alec) and everyone’s grocery stable Psorakas food market. But they are excited to see the home go to new, loving owners!
