Opening May 15th, Lagotto in Fitzroy North is located at the base of the newly completed Milieu residential development designed by Fieldwork architects and Flack Studio interior design. These impressive aesthetic credentials are continued the Italian modernism inspired all-day Italian and foodstore, where no detail has been overlooked.
Flack have brought their signature flair to this project, bringing together glossy burgundy light fixtures, Rosso Levanto stone treads in the steel staircase, custom joinery with American oak and brass inlay, aluminium Venetian blinds, pink terrazzo flooring, and absolutely no shortage of marble. All up, the experience is one of nostalgic 1950s Italy, with a modern Melbourne edge.
David Flack explains ‘referencing one of our favourite designers, Italian modernist Gio Ponti, we developed a strong interplay and a sense of permanency – as if the space had always been there.’ The design team worked with local contractors, stonemasons, joiners, metalworkers and furniture suppliers, and this craftsmanship is celebrated in the resolved space. David highlights ‘in a way it harks back to the originality and handmade nature of spaces built by Italian migrants upon arrival in Australia through the 50s and 60s.’
Katie McCormack of Milieu Hospitality emphasises that Lagotto has been designed to be welcoming to everyone, from dawn to dusk (and ‘till late’ Thursday, Friday and Saturday).’
When we asked David for his tip for the best seat in the joint, he was torn. ‘It’s between being propped up at that bar, or sinking into the custom banquette that curves against the perimeter of the main dining space.’ A tough choice!
