The Beachfront ‘McKay House’ Is Up For Auction This Weekend

Modernist Australia

Three-hours drive south of Sydney, on Burleigh Way, Mollymook, is one hell of a ‘trophy property for the discerning’ – as the listing spruiks!

In this case, both we and our columnists at Modernist Australia tend to agree.  With almost two acres of absolute beach frontage – a natural sea pool at your doorstep, one of the best surf breaks in Australia to one side of your front lawn and Mollymook Beach on the other – how could you not fall for this open-plan-home-and-unit combo!?

The property features a three-bedroom home, along with a self-contained unit. Photo – courtesy of Ray While Surf Side Properties.

There are 180-degree views over pristine blue waters and offers rolling lawn directly onto white sands via private access. Photo – courtesy of Ray While Surf Side Properties.

‘…exquisite 1960s indigenous architecture from one of the nation’s most-beloved Modernist firms.’ – Patricia Callan.

Sit down gang, we’ve got something to show you and it is nothing less than a knee-buckling slice of pure Australian sublime.

Not content with being a pristine example of exquisite 1960s indigenous architecture from one of the nation’s most-beloved Modernist firms – that of Allen Jack + Cottier Architects – this unassuming three-plus-one bedroom, c.1968 residence sits nestled and harmonious on a headland so naturally beautiful we cannot quite believe it’s real.

Unreal or otherwise, the only course of action is to admire it all, let the imagined rumble of the ocean, the smell of the timber and the very ebb of your soul astral project across your troubled plain and into this crowning glory of our breathtaking national bounty of both man and earth. Amen.

View the property listing on Domain, and original MA article here.

Run by Patricia Callan and Pete Bakacs, Modernist Australia is the passion-project/website dedicated to raising the profile of mid-century design and modernist principles in Australia. For more swell eye-candy, visit Modernistaustralia.com.
