Melbourne communications consultant and design enthusiast Kate Dinon runs KDPR, a boutique public relations and communications agency, where she works with tech start-ups, government, interesting corporates and  lifestyle brands. However, Kate has also always had a keen interest in design and interiors, and whilst living abroad in recent years, spent time in London studying interior styling at Central Saint Martins.

Kate’s latest project combines her passion for design with her background in brand strategy.  Commissioned Editions is a project that commissions local designers to create limited edition objects, which Kate then has manufactured locally. ‘I see my role as one of curator, finding talent and providing the platform that allows their presentation of original solutions,’ she says.

After just over a year in development, the first two pieces from Commissioned Editions are launching this week, exclusively available through Criteria Collection in Melbourne. The first is a Luggage Rack designed by Sydney-based Evie Group, made from brass and saddle tan leather.

The second piece is a collaboration between creative consultant Robyn Holt (previously of Monocle and ex-CEO of Conde Nast Australia) and furniture maker Liam Mugavin, who have joined to create a piece aptly called ‘Library Stairs’. The idea was to create a functional furniture item which would transform any book corner into a library. ‘I knew that Robyn had an affinity for books and libraries from her time on the board of the State Library of NSW, and so I asked her to collaborate with me and bring the library stairs to life,’ mentions Kate. The pair then sought out the efforts of emerging furniture designer Liam Mugavin to turn their idea into something tangible.

Commissioned Editions will produce just one to two functional design pieces every year. Kate is excited to see where it goes, and who she meets along the way. ‘Something Robyn always says is that 1 + 1 = 100, and I very much agree with that concept’ she says!

Commissioned Editions pieces are available exclusively from Criteria Collection in Cremorne.
