New paintings by Kirra Jamison - Tenon, 2012, acrylic on polyester,  185 x 153 cm
Kirra Jamison works on paintings for her upcoming show - photographs by Paul Barbera (see the full studio visit here!)
Our old pal Kirra Jamison doesn't sit still for long.  It seems with every season she's experimenting with a new style or medium, keen to keep things fresh and show her incredible versatility across painting, printmaking and collage. After developing a small collection of screenprints on paper for 'Total Control', her show earlier this year at Craft Victoria, Kirra was inspired to make a series of larger scale paintings with a similar feel, masking sections of canvas to create floating shapes of solid, vibrant colour.  The results are rather spectacular, and seem to signal a new phase for Kirra! These new paintings have been created for a solo exhibition entitled 'Locomotor', to be held at Jan Murphy Gallery in Brisbane next month.  HOWEVER Melbourne readers can get a little sneak preview this week at The Melbourne Art Fair!  Sophie Gannon Gallery (which represents Kirra in Melbourne) and Jan Murphy Gallery (Brisbane) have joined forces, and will be hosting a shared stand at the fair, showcasing work by ex-tattoo artist and recent recipient of the Doug Moran National Portrait Prize Leslie Rice, alongside works by Michael Muir, Danie Mellor and of course Kirra J.  You'll be able to see Kirra's recent Total Control screenprints (if you missed them at Craft Victoria), as well as a sneak peek at work for her upcoming Brisbane show! The Melbourne Art Fair is at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton this Thursday August 2nd until Sunday August 5th 2012 - tickets are $30.00. Kirra's Brisbane exhibition, entitled Locomotor, opens on August 28th at Jan Murphy Gallery.
