We, The Brave is our newest video series, created in partnership with Broadsheet and MYOB. The series focusses on inspiring self-made small business owners who have bravely forged their own path, and had great success doing it!
As a small business owner myself, I can say from first-hand experience that launching, building, and keeping a small business thriving over the long term is an incredibly rewarding way to make a living… but it’s no easy feat. It takes a huge amount of self-belief to get started – and most importantly, to stay the distance.
This video series will shine a spotlight on three small businesses who’ve been brave enough to take a leap, and have had great success running their own race. First up, we meet Landscape Designer Phillip Withers, who you may remember because his talented team created Mountains our incredible landscaped garden at TDF Open House in 2017!
Since launching his business in 2012, Phillip Withers Landscape Design has grown to a team of nine landscape designers and horticulturalists, and they’ve won a number of seriously impressive accolades – including a gold medal for their spectacular show garden at the Melbourne Flower and Garden Show in 2017.
Interestingly, Phillip’s path to success hasn’t been totally straightforward – it’s a little known fact that he originally studied fashion design (true story!) and his first business, straight out of Uni, was a T-shirt label! However, a stint helping out a friend on some landscaping jobs re-orientated Phillip’s career, and got him dreaming about landscape design. He returned to study, and spent four years working for other landscape design firms, before going out on his own.
With a fresh approach to landscape design, and a strong focus on sustainability, Phillip Withers Landscape Design has seen incredible growth over the past 6 years, and we’ve no doubt there’s much more to come!
Phillip was kind enough to let us shadow him for a day recently and gain an insight into his story, the drive that encouraged him to launch his business, and the factors that have contributed to his success so far.
