This week Lucy and I are very excited to welcome Kate Gaskin to the Guest Blog! Kate was our lady on the look-out at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week and has put together her Fashion Week Favourites! We will see lots of runway highlights, some behind the scenes action and a glimpse at what the cool kids were wearing with some street style snaps. - Jenny x
Fashion week is always such an exciting and inspiring time of the year and day one didn't fail to impress.
It certainly started out with a BANG with the Romance Was Born show! Upon entering the old wooden warehouse on the water at Circular Quay, excited crowds were greeted by cotton wool trees and rich red carpets.
I knew we were in for something special when I opened the pop-up show guide, and then as the thunder of recorded traffic noises came to a screeching high, the backdrop for the show also unfolded like a pop-up comic book page from childhood days. Created by paper artist Benja Harney, it was the perfect complement to the pop-art aesthetic running through the collection. See more of his amazing creations here...
I love how the Romance Was Born designers always go the extra mile and create a real spectacle of a show, each with distinct and vastly different theming every year. This year's theme based around Marvel comic book characters was an absolute winner, and I feel I can only really do it justice through some spectacular visuals, so without further ado.......
Another highlight from day one were Camilla Frank's incredibly adorned, ethnic-inspired gypsy girls in her 'Gypset' show. Known as the 'Kaftan Queen', Camilla unleashed a bevy of beauties laden in a mix-and-match of graphic scarf prints, paisley and tropical florals.
Inspired by the likes of great women such as Frida Khalo and Talitha Getty, the looks were rich in an abundance of colour and print, and were finished off with layers and layers of jewels and quirky accessories (one of my favourites being a back pack covered all over in fresh vibrant flowers). The tropical, holiday vibe was enough to put anyone in the mood for a pina colada (hey, I know it's only Monday but it is fashion week after all right?!).
To round out the day Gary Bigeni presented a clean collection of brightly colour and patterned looks with a modern, minimal feel.
Ok so one day down, four to go!
