Market Lane specialty coffee roasters in Prahran – All the lovely pics here are taken by Tony Mott, and styled by Claire Larritt-Evans.
Melbourne just can’t seem to get enough good coffee, can we? I mean, there is great coffee to be had on almost every street, in almost every neighbourhood… and yet, it seems there’s always room for one more gorgeous new coffee spot! And they’re ALL always busy! (I mean… have you tried to get a table at Seven Seeds recently..?!)
I have been meaning to post about Market Lane for agessss… Melbourne’s newest Coffee connoisseurs opened their doors late last year, and doesn’t it look pretty!? Their space in Prahan Market was designed by Deborah Lacey of DJL architect, with styling and interior details by Claire Larritt-Evans, a super talented Melbourne stylist / busy young Mum who I originally met through Megan Morton a couple of years ago! It was Claire who first showed me these pics of Market Lane when she had just completed the project last year – wow, gorgeous or what?! Somehow Deborah and Claire pulled this place together in just three and half slightly crazy months last year! Now that is impressive!
Anyway of course I’m babbling about the beautiful design of the place, but rest assured, Market Lane do also seriously know their coffee! Owners Fleur Studd and Jason Scheltus each come from a background in speciality coffee – Jason trained as a roaster at Monmouth Coffee Company in London, and Fleur owns Melbourne Coffee Merchants – a speciality green bean importing business which supplies boutique coffee roasters around Australia including St Ali, Seven Seeds, and North Melbourne’s Auction Rooms. The opportunity to open Market Lane arose unexpectedly in the middle of last year, when a site became available at Prahran Market. For Fleur and Jason it was an opportunity too perfect to pass up!
Fleur and Jason are passionate about their coffees – they source unique coffee blends from around the globe, roasting them carefully in small batches on site to bring out the unique regional characteristics in each coffee. They’re keen to pass on their enthusiasm for the provenance of their coffees through free sampling and public ‘cuppings’ (tastings) every day at 10am. They also do simple, minimalist food – lovely pastries from Dench Bakers, and delicious ‘Bread and Jam’ which consists of Dench Baguettes, French Lescure butter and Annie Smithers Jam. Simple and yum.
Both Fleur and stylist Claire are loyal TDF readers (thankyou guys!)…. and so Market Lane have dreamed up a truly generous giveaway for Design Files readers!
The prize – 6 x 3 month Market Lane Coffee Club subscriptions (valued at $125 each!) :
6 winners will receive 250g of freshly roasted coffee, delivered every 2 weeks to their front door or office (within Australia) for 3 months!
How awesome is that!? The gift that keeps on giving for 3 whole months! …So every morning whilst you are checking your emails and loyally reading The Design Files (he he!), you can be drinking your freshly brewed Market Lane coffee!
The winners will be able to choose between a ‘roasters pick’ membership (a different coffee every fortnight for pour over / plunger / stove top) or the ‘espresso’ membership (suitable for people who have an espresso machine at home).
*please note this giveaway is now closed and winners have been notified by email! Thanks so much for all your entries! WOW nothing like fresh coffee to get people excited! Huge thanks once again to Market Lane for their generous prizes.

Hi Lucy
As a newbie to Melbourne one of my interior design friends introduced me to your blog about 3 months ago in preparation of my inpending arrival….. your daily treats have left my mind spinning on how to decorate my new apartment…… and every morning I tell all my friends who are joining that it is like a slice of a really good magazine right into your inbox as a morning treat every day!!!
Would love the coffee….. to help in my job search!!
Amy
Loving the new look Lucy. Well done to your team!
Nice to navigate around. Archive a dangerous place to tread.. you can lose hours.
Coffee giveaway right up my alley! I can sip whilst flicking through your wonderful design coverage!
My mouth is watering at the thought. A whole new dimension to doing my organic shopping at Prahran market each week! As someone newly returned to Melbourne after 30 years away, it’s a delight to be rediscovering all its wonders. Thanks Lucy for leading me to all the best spots. As a writer, I love to find gorgeous spots to spend a few hours tapping away and you’ve just found me another. Thanks. Jill

Beautiful new site Lucy, all that hard work has paid off!! Brilliant giveaway too!! xxjukka
do u think it will make getting up easier in the morning?
most definitely! I love Market Lane, it is always a treat to go there and enjoy a coffee : )
Long time reader, first time comment-er! The new site looks great! Some of this coffee may lessen the guilt of letting my brother make all of the coffees at our house…
Love Market Lane – their look, their ethos, & their coffee – and it’s great to see them so gorgeously presented here. Looking forward to following The Design Files – just beautiful!
Good Morning, the blog is looking great! I love Market Lane Coffee, they use it and sell it at Deadman Espresso in South Melbourne, one of my fave places. An ideal giveaway to kick start the day.
Love the current trend for coffee shops being so natural and raw with their design! This place is incredible and I wish I lived in Melbourne so I could try the coffee! However the beans would be an amazing substitute and may just convince me to come try the real thing!
Lucy, congratulations, the new site looks fabulous. Please count me in for the coffee competition!
Cheers,
Suzanne
The new site looks great – well done. Market Lane – gorgeous. Thanx for the tip and freshly ground coffee, delivered would just be divine. We have 2 extremely serious coffee lovers at my place. cheers Melita x

PS the new blog is fantastic!
Congratulations on the new site. I wish I lived in Melbourne and could start the day with such great coffee but the coffee club might do for now.
Is anybody else staring with glazed eyes at the froth in that last coffee photo… I can almost smell it!
Lucy, it all looks great! Bet you are really happy – but exhausted :) – after navigating through the quagmire of issues surrounding internet overhauls! Well worth it in the end though.
Also I was THRILLED to see such an indepth coverage of DMT! I was pretty much heart broken to see that the only two days non-professionals could visit conflicted with a prebooked “xmas in July” holiday in Point Lonsdale. I couldn’t believe I missed it… but with all of your pics, I sat down with a coffee and pretended I hadn’t! My partner thinks I’m sad, but I loved it!
Thank you so much.
PS Oh yes, the giveaway…Coffee me up buttercup!
I have just moved to Melbourne from a long stint in London and have been blown away by how amazing the coffee culture is here (well, not that there’s much to compare to coming from London!). I’m definitely going to be adding Market Lane to my list of places to go for a saturday morning coffee. Thanks for the heads up! And count me in for the coffee comp too! :-)
Beautiful photos!
Great Shots. Almost as good as the coffee these guys are roasting!
Missing Melb… Love the Market Lane take away cups!
Just FYI, can’t see some of the pics in the blog or in the email sent, hmm not sure why…

fitting that I should enter this generous comp.
The site is looking great as is the coffee.
Thanks for the opportunity!
Great coffee, well thought out decor and great, friendly people!
It’s like the caffeine hit just started! Oh i love Market Lane and can I just say, I really love these shots too – if i squint, I can almost believe I’m not at work and am just kicking back at the market for a very looooong coffee break while reading the morning paper. Sigh. Thanks to your little helpers for a great new look on the blog too – it’s so schmick!
Mmmmm good coffee on the doorstep! Couldn’t ask for much more than that.
Market Lane is the best! I would love to win… please pick me Random Number Generator!
For at-home coffee making endeavours Market Lane has always come up trumps with the best beans, but I never realised how beautiful the fitout was. Will make sure I stop by now instead of sending the boy out to do it (although Coffee delivery for a Melburnian would be like Christmas every month!)
Oh goodness what a prize! I just took my last sip of my home coffee as I read this. Oh how I wish I had a cup of Market Lane’s! x
Mmmmmm coffee!!
Great space…just what Prahran Market needed.
Love the new site!
Don’t get out as much for an early morning coffee anymore so delivery to my door sounds like heaven.

Lucy are you using a true “Random Number Generator” or just a “Pseudo-Random Number Generator”? Not that it makes a difference for the purposes of the competition… I just wonder how advanced your nerd skills are!
See http://j.mp/pseudorandom

Looks amaaazing.
I love Market Lane — Prahran Market had always been such a wasteland for good coffee, so I was over the moon when Market Lane finally opened and gave the market the cafe it always deserved. There are few better ways to start the weekend than with an almond croissant and a double espresso, both beautifully presented. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

MMMMMM, Coffee!!!!
Caffeine is my shepherd; I shall not doze.
It maketh me to wake in green pastures:
It leadeth me beyond the sleeping masses.
It restoreth my buzz:
And I will dwell in the House of Mochas forever.
yay for coffee!!
Strong evokations -nostalgic memories of life in my Uni canteen circa 1960,
animated chatter and the heady aroma of freshly ground beans.
I wish we had a blog like yours for Brisbane design hotspots!!!
The perfect start to a day, my daily freshly brewed indulgence!
Another place to add to the ‘must visit’ list for my next Melbourne trip. Can’t beat a good coffee.
