Sara Lundgren moved to Australia from Sweden seven years ago to finish her degree. A single semester visit was planned, that would coincide with her graduation, but by the end of Sara’s six month stay in Sydney, she had found a new country to call home. ‘The warm weather and beaches of Australia had a big appeal from my cold town in northern Sweden!’ she explains. By 2012, Sara had fully embraced her new home, and started her own small business – a homewares range called Zakkia.
Zakkia started modestly, and was born out of Sara’s desire to furnish her new home with things she liked. ‘I was searching to find things for my own place, and then just decided to design these products myself,’ she says. Her homewares are inspired by her Scandinavian upbringing. ‘My Swedish heritage is a big influence – our designs are clean and minimal with simple shapes that really let the natural materials shine’ Sarah says.
After many months spent designing, testing, perfecting prototypes and manufacturing, Sarah took her products to market. Her plan was to start small and sell online, then expand and offer a wholesaling component to the business. The response to the range was overwhelming, and soon Zakkia was being sold nationally across the country through various stockists.
Zakkia’s extensive range of homewares includes handmade tableware, decorative glassware, candles, planters, and very nifty storage solutions that promise a more organised life (or at the very least an organised bathroom!).
Zakkia’s range is available online here or through their national stockists.
