Mid last year, Lisa introduced us to Dowel Jones, the design studio of young local designers Dale Hardiman and Adam Lynch. At that time, this industrious pair has just set up their own studio in Thomastown, and were having great success with their first manufactured product, the Dowel Jones flat-packed floor lamp, made from timber dowel rods and custom made rubber fittings.
In the eight or so months since we last visited Dale and Adam, a LOT has been going on. They’ve been focusing on building up an impressive range of brand new products – new furniture, new lighting and our latest favourite – a striking range of brand new desk accessories.
‘The original idea to work on an accessories range came from all the leather offcuts we were acquiring from one of Adam’s other products’ says Dale. Keen to find a use for these salvaged remnants, developing a range of smaller functional accessories in house was a logical move.
The ‘Desk Life’ range incorporates the ‘Blocchi’ pencil holder, ‘Tombstone’ mousepad in leather and/or marble, and the ‘YOU Rule’ leather ruler, with copper plate backing. All the objects are made by Dale and Adam’s very own hands in Thomastown! ‘Even the parts we outsource are all manufactured in neighbouring factories’ says Dale.
Dale and Adam will be showing these and their other brand new designs with the ‘Melbourne Movement’ at the Milan Furniture Fair later this month – GO BOYS GO! They’ve also got their sights firmly set on even bigger and better things for Dowel Jones later this year… despite being in their current studio for less than a year, they’re already looking for a bigger work space, and hope to open their own showroom later in the year. We have no doubt they’ll get there sooner rather than later…!
