It's no secret we are big fans of Sydney artist and bedlinen designer Rachel Castle, and so we were pretty pumped to see her cheerful new pillowcase and sheet designs, which just hit her online store this week!
Rachel doesn't put out new designs very often. That's simply because she really isn't into making new stuff just for the sake of it. Instead, the design and production cycle for Castle is very intuitive, and closely tied to Rachel's art practice - after all, her painted canvases, prints and embroideries are where all her designs are born.
'We bring out a few new things every now and again when we just can't STOP OURSELVES from making something good into a pillowcase or a little cuff on a sheet' explains Rachel. 'We don't follow the seasons or make a new range because we have to, we add new pieces when we absolutely can't wait a minute longer to have something new on our beds. Everything works back with our white cotton quilts, so its never about reinvesting in a whole new bed range, just about adding some new sheets, pillowcases, or a couple of new cushions. That's all you need and voila happy new bed!'
I think this approach really sums up what is so unique about Castle - at the end of the day, it's very contained little range, put together in a very gentle, joyful, measured way.
Having said all that, we're pretty glad to report that the latest pieces from Castle are a brilliant addition to the collection - an effortless extension of Rachel's much loved (and much photographed!) polka dot designs. We've got a feeling the new candy-coloured diagonal stripes, and multicolour 12 spot pillowcases will become instant Castle classics.

Loving the on-trend fluro pink accents in the Rachel Castle bed linen, would complement my hot pink bedside table lamp beautifully… but how to convince the man of the house that more pink = perfection? A quick look at the Castle and Things website and I’m guessing the hotel grade, 100% cotton, 280 thread count will do the trick!

Rachael is out of this world, she is always bursting with colours. As soon as I came to know her products via Insta, I straight away wanted her burst of colour into my world. My sons room is a burst of Castle via (@cordelia_f) On Insta. Can’t wait for her new 12 spot and diagonal navy strip to arrive in the mail. excited and I can’t wait to meeting her in the flash at the school next month. When my sister and I were younger we got a couple of guinea pigs from some friends who lived in Adelaide! We were so excited and dad was on parent duty so it was extremely easy to win him over and convince him that these guinea pigs would enhance our way of life greatly. When we got home to Melbourne we set about building a pen and for a little while trialed keeping them in the back yard but decided it was too risky with the dogs. So we moved them to the front porch. Our front entrance consisted of two doors (like so many Australian homes do): a thick wooden door and a wire door in front of that. In summer the wooden door was always open. After the guinea pigs moved to the front porch we noticed two strange things: one was a mysterious pool of water by the wire door that flowed out onto the front porch; the other was that Lottie, our dog, would never come when she was called and would disappear for hours everyday. We soon came to a logical conclusion and realised that Lottie would set up camp for the day at the front door where she could keep a hungry eye on the guinea pigs and presumably contemplate the best way to get them in her tummy, and that the puddle of water was in fact, saliva. Produced, one can only assume, by the desperate desire to feast on the banquet that lived, in ignorance of their admirer, on the front porch. I feel about this bedding the way Lottie felt about those guinea pigs. And, the pool of saliva produced by desire is forming. ;)
