Art Melbourne
You’d be living under a rock if you didn’t know Art Melbourne is happening this weekend in Melbourne. Once billed as the ‘affordable art fair’, Art Melbourne brings together nearly 100 galleries and a vast number of Australian artists under one roof at the Royal Exhibition Building in Carlton this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It’s always a varied and eclectic event, and whilst I’ll admit ‘affordable’ is a somewhat subjective term(!), it’s always good for a sticky beak – even if you’re not in the market!
This year Melbourne’s award-winning Art Series Hotels are playing a key role in the event, creating their very own themed lounge on site at the Royal Exhibition Building. Styled with furniture and artwork from each of the three hotels, this space will serve as a relaxing spot for visitors to rest, mingle, and learn a little more about each hotel’s namesake artist – John Olsen, Adam Cullen and Charles Blackman. Here, Art Series Hotels’ in-house curator Jane O’Neill will also give a series of entertaining and informative talks entitled ‘Tasty Chats‘! On Friday night, celebrate the end of the week with wine and cheese as you listen to Jane’s presentation on John Olsen, on Saturday morning tuck into cupcakes and bubbles as you learn about Charles Blackman, OR soak up that Sunday hangover with a Bloody Mary as you take in tales of Adam Cullen’s grunge influences (very fitting!).
The Art Series ‘Tasty Chats’ talks are FREE but tickets to Art Melbourne do cost $20.00… however we have 5 x Art Melbourne double passes to give away AND as an extra treat, Art Series Hotels have also offered an overnight stay at any of their hotels for one lucky TDF reader! (to be used at any time not just for this weekend!). Ooooh what a lovely mini mid-winter getaway!

Affordable art is just what I need. Have 2 large bare walls (for the first time ever in my life) that require something big and bold. This exhibition sounds like the right place to start!
I have been working so hard of late that I had almost forgotten about Art Melbourne – an amazing event! Could think of nothing better than enjoying a real day out (and night too!) Just the chance to be totally inspired, swim around in my imagination for a few hours….and perhaps spend a little money. What’s not to love?

Charles Blackman is my all time favourite painter, the Alice in Wonderland series at the Ian Potter a few years ago was so magical, I could have stayed for days. I would love to go to Art Melbourne but at the moment a night at the Blackman would win hands down! What a great giveaway TDF.

Oh, I can’t get to Art Melbourne, but I’d love an overnight stay at an art hotel. Through sheer stupidity I enrolled in a unit at Melbourne Uni (I’m travelling insterstate to study there) that coincides with my first wedding anniversary. Oops. So now my partner is thinking of flying over with me, but to be honest, we can’t really afford that, or a nice hotel. A night at an Art Hotel would sure be appreciated!
I’m from Argentina and I have been in Australia for a little more than 2 years alreday. I used to never miss an ARTEBA, kind of the Buenos Aires version of Art Melbourne. I love Art hotels and Boutique style hotels, beats staying in places with thousands of poky and tasteless rooms.

over the weekend i was mistaken for charles blackman’s daughter. i don’t know whether i am ashamed or proud that i went along with it to get a free drink. regardless this is a wonderful prize.
Oh BOY!!! I’m making the big move to Melbourne shortly and events like this make me so excited and reinforce that we are making the right decision. I can’t wait to explore the city and have events like this at my fingertips. Hmm…. now, just to pick some affordable artwork to go on the walls of our new apartment. xx

Having visited the Henry Jones Art Hotel in Hobart, I would love to explore both Art Melbourne and one of the Art Series Hotels in Melbourne. I’ve already been considering the Charles Blackman.
