My Destop, in Desktop!
This is my desktop! (Actually, it’s my dining table, which is also my desktop). It was photographed a little while ago by James Braund, and features in the brand-new re-jigged Desktop Magazine, which launched just last week!
In reality, as you can see, this image is somewhat scarily enormous – a DOUBLE PAGE SPREAD in fact, with no border at all! Yikes! Lucky I didn’t leave anything questionable on the bookshelves…! You can check out a slightly larger version of this shot on James’ website here, but I urge you also to grab a copy of Desktop this month for the full ‘I can’t believe Lucy has that book / artwork / bad Alessi corkscrew on her bookshelf’ experience! (Anything Alessi is my boyfriend’s, for the record).
Desktop Magazine has historically been a magazine for people who work in advertising / graphic design and print media. It has been around for 25 YEARS (crazy!), but has relaunched this month with a brand new look, a much broader design focus, and a brilliant new editor who is just 26 years old! Very ‘Press Gang‘ if you ask me, especially as the man in question, Brendan McKnight, bears a striking resemblance to Spike (played by Dexter Fletcher). This can only be a good thing, don’t you think?
Jokes aside, Brendan is clearly some kind of wunderkind brainiac – the new-look mag is seriously excellent. It now seems somehow far more relevant to design enthusiasts, as well as industry professionals, and feels thorough and kind of ‘meaty’ (up from 84 to 100 pages each month!). It’s also printed on beautiful uncoated matte paper stock. Well worth a look for all lovers of design on paper – I promise!

I would adore to receive this exciting mag, I fell in love with the golfball typewriter back in the early 1970′s – font choices plus and go weak in the knees when I see product that lets me know that a font and colour mad person like myself made me stop and admire that product and hopefully buy same.

Your desktop looks like a hive of multi-tasking action – I love it But even more so, I LOVE your Press Gang reference! That was my (adolescent) favourite show ever!!! I stood behind “Spike” in a line at a deli in London once and almost fainted with excitement!

Hi Lucy! I picked up the brand new Desktop from Magnation yesterday and I love it! I flipped open to the spread with your desktop and quietly said to my boyfriend “Oh thats Lucy” like you’re a long time friend. Haha. I feel like I know you because I’ve followed your blog for so long. Anyway, the new Desktop mag is lovely. It’s such a step-up from where they were! Its uncoated stock, gridded content and sophisticated cover have definitely won me over and I’m definitely considering a subscription. X x

Just read the new issue, very impressive and would love a subscription thanks guys.
Just searched my macbook for the mock Desktop Magazine cover we had to create while I was studying graphic art and then realised it was probably on a zip100 somewhere never to be pulled out of archive ever again. I had little 0′s and 1′s all over this plate of food like binary ants. It was horrible but first year when you’re still learning how to use photoshop, things do tend to come out cute/weird/not so professional looking. Ha wish I could have sent it through for a laugh!
I’m rushing out to pick this issue up right now – perfect wor work inspiration. Would love to win a year’s subscription though – looks like a great mag!

Loving the new refreshed look of the Desktop magazine. I have been religiously purchasing the magazine ever since I got out fresh from uni. After 8 years in the industry, I still flip through the magazine to get an insight into the Australian design culture and to be inspired!

wow… in my previous life as a graphic designer (ie before three children (and yes I blame them for most things)), desktop mag used to be THE mag. Oh, the good old days. So glad to see some new in it. I’ll be looking out for it next time I am perusing the shelves at the local newsagency.

Being a graphic designer for the last 20 something years I remember the early issues of this publication. It has always been a great source of inspiration and I’m sure it will inspire many more up and coming designers in the future. Good on you Desktop!
