Freedom Furniture – new collection giveaway!

by Lucy Feagins, Editor
Monday 28th March 2011

New pieces from Freedom‘s Autumn collection.  Clockwise from top left – Victor rug - $186,  a cluster of Single Bulb Pendants – $69.95 each, cute new cushions including ‘Draftsmen’ and ‘Molly’ – from $39.95, Satellite Coffee Table – $149, Carpenter’s Dining Table – $1499 and Venus chair in ‘Goldilocks’ – just $99.00.

I was very lucky recently to be amongst a couple of other brilliant local bloggers invited to attend the launch of Freedom‘s new Autumn collection in Sydney.  Ooh la la it was a rather impressive event held in the very beautiful Sydney College of the Arts studio buildings in Rozelle – and even featured an intimate performance by Sally Seltmann of ‘1,2,3,4‘ songwriting fame!  Suffice to say we were very well looked after – although mainly I was just pretty excited to be treated like actual ‘media’!  How posh.

ANYWAY the folks at Freedom are doing their darndest to shake things up with their latest collection, and I must admit they did surprise me with some of their new pieces!  Alongside the more traditional styles they’re well known for, they’ve also just launched some super contemporary and limited edition products which caught my attention.  My pick of the bunch is pictured above… although I must say it was VERY hard to choose between the 10 new limited edition rainbow coloured Venus Dining chairs!  With names like  ‘Goldilocks’ (pictured above), ‘Leprechaun’ and ‘Bubble Gum’, I’m sure these guys will have no trouble making new friends!

LUCKILY for you guys, the lovely girls at Freedom HQ have decided to offer a super generous giveaway for 2 lucky Design Files readers!  One reader will win a $750.00 Freedom gift voucher, and there is also $250.00 voucher for second prize!

The rules for this comp a little different to usual, please pay attention!

To enter, you must :

- Visit the freedom website here.

- Select your favourite item from the Autumn 2011 collection. (can be furniture, accessories, anything!)

- pop back here and leave a comment on this post today, letting us know in 25 words or less your favourite item from the current range and why!

Two winners will then be selected and contacted tomorrow by email!  This competition is open to all Australian and New Zealand residents only.

(Freedom have posted the fineprint terms and conditions for this giveaway over here if you are so inclined).

Yippee thanks Freedom!  Whoever wins this one, I will give you extra points if you buy 6 x Venus dining chairs in 6 different colours!  How cool would that be?

*Update – This giveaway is now closed!  Thanks so much for all your entries!  The winners were comment #24 – Kitty’s Kaboodle, and second place winner, #96 – Madeleine Beatty!

“Digital 2.5 Seat Sofa” – I love colourful pieces and spaces. This would even work in a neutral decor as a bit of pop! Very cool.

  • Carly 4 years ago

It has to be the Hemmingway Chaise because I want to be there right now with my two cats, magazines, books and laptop.

  • Lauren 4 years ago

The Victor Rug- oh how the classic black and white would be FABULOUS in my little abode. Pick me, Pick me!!!!!

  • masha 4 years ago

Definitely the threadneedle armchair. It makes me happy just to look at!

  • michelle 4 years ago

Love the wavelength coffee table…had a little drool over the catalogue after gently prising the rain sodden and glues pages gently apart. Also reached laundry hamper nirvana with all the new baskets – sadly very first world issues :(

  • Alisa 4 years ago

the Carpenters Dining Table for me.
as a table to share food with friends and family.
a space to be creative and make creative.
    and a table to admire.

  • Jill 4 years ago

Oh my! I haven’t been to Freedom for years – always thought they were very mainstream – but those multi-coloured Venus chairs are to die for. I totally love the idea of six all in different colours around my dining table (which is in fact my old primary school principal’s desk from a tiny school in Northern Victoria). Hard choice between those and the carpenter’s table – but that wouldn’t fit in my apartment. Browsed through the gorgeous cushions and rugs as well – can definitely see I need to take a visit! Thanks Lucy.

Oooh! Hard choice! I’ve narrowed it down to the Journal Chest of Drawers. Beautiful and not too deep, like similar pieces I’ve seen.

  • Lani 4 years ago

I was so pleasantly impressed by the Autumn Freedom range. Such great pieces.
Its so difficult to choose only one piece but I think it’d be the Hemmingway Chaise.

There are so many other noteable mentions including the Journal range, the bulldog cushion, the Reid Slipper chair, the list goes on!

  • Erin 4 years ago

    The Reid Slipper Chair ‘red':
    – The colour would make me smile,
    – My baby boy would read books on it,
    – My slippers would tuck under it.

the Hemmingway Chaise … perfect for curling up on and reading a good book!

  • Hannah 4 years ago

I’d have to go for the lovely oakwright two door table for the hallway – so I’d finally have somewhere to put my keys and not lose them every single morning before work!

  • Penelope 4 years ago

My boyfriend and I have just brought our first home (converted warehouse – yipee!) and we love the space, but we don’t love the junky downlights the previous owners have installed. 3 of the industrial pendant lights in copper along the breakfast bench would be perfect!

  • Joh 4 years ago

Choosing one is just too tricky, even Hemmingway (Chaise) had a friend or a (Threadneedle) Wing (Chair) man, to fill his Journal (Chest of Drawers).

  • Nic @ Yardage Design 4 years ago

The Old Orchard Hallstand – we’ve just finished plastering and painting our hallway, and this would go perfectly. (The Great Wall Chair tickled my fancy too!)

  • Laurine 4 years ago

The 260cm Farmhouse DIning table. My 87yo grandmother, instead of giving us an inheritance when she passes away, is currently building a holiday home for us (her 10 grandchildren) to have that her son (an architect) designed. She is so completely selfless and a generouswoman. The house is just a few weeks away from being finished and we’re currently looking for furniture. This table would fit all of us, just the way she’d like it to be.

  • Fiona 4 years ago

  • Erin 4 years ago

Wow. This was tricky. A $750 voucher would make such a difference to my home – so where shall i start???? Would snap up the stencil occasional table in a second. Money would also go towards the Penfold 3 seat sofa (we are without a couch at the moment and a beautiful sofa like this would be much prefarable to sitting in bean bags!) There are also some lovely cushions in colours i quite like – mustard and charcoals. Would get the 6 venus dining chairs – but all in the one colour, probably yellow or the aqua. Ahhhhh, my home would be bursting with colour and fun to fight off the winter blues (that shall no doubt be arriving any moment!).

  • kathryn hall 4 years ago

For me it has to be the four poster queen bed. Simple straight lines. Well balanced. Simply lovely.

  • Rachel 4 years ago

I Love the Multi Light red pendants!!!! I have been looking for these forever but all the ones I have found in second hand stores require the old bulbs which are impossible to find now! It is sooo exciting to see Freedom bringing this style into there stores and it also suits modern use! Cant wait to get them for over my kitchen bench!

  • Lara 4 years ago

The Venus chair – a set of these would look great against our studio’s one black wall where we plan to paint a mural and dream.

Just love that zingy red Radar Occasional Table…a traditional vibe with all that colour and energy. Yes please.

  • maryd 4 years ago

The carpenter’s dining table is beautiful – I can see my best design work coming from atop this surface.

  • Tam 4 years ago

Threadneedle armchair – not only great colours but a beautiful shape :-)

  • rebecca 4 years ago

Even though I ADORE the patchwork chair, I have to fall back onto the re-released LOFT sofa. We have an original (6 years old) that we customised the fabric on, and my husband and I have never agreed on our second sofa. Its set the standard too high!! We’re going back to the classic design of the loft AGAIN!. In a new colour! Is that wrong ( !??!! )

  • Miss Eagle 4 years ago

Thank you for this opportunity – and thank you to Freedom too.

I agree with you about the Venus chairs. Love them. Eye-catching and I think they would be comfortable too. However – I am an Aged Pensioner living in a one bedroom unit. I don’t have room for them. What I do love and do have room for is the patchwork dhurri on page 24. It picks up and co-ordinates with the colours in my living room.

BTW, I must not miss the opportunity to say how much I love your site. My daughter now goes to it as well. It is a cornucopia of style and info.

  • Madeline 4 years ago

Ooooh I’m loving the Babushka nesting table set! Yummy colours and of course those gorgeous Venus chairs – I want one in every colour please!!

  • Jasmine 4 years ago

It is almost impossible for me to just pick one thing, i thought i had found it and then kept finding other things. For love and practicality wise it would have to be the Journal Chest of Drawers.

  • Estelle 4 years ago

I have to say I am very disappointed.

I think hosting this competition was a mistake as you are lending your support to a very large corporation who is blatantly ripping off local and international designers work. Design is often out of the reach of the everyday individual because bespoke items are essentially works of art that require a great deal of time and energy to produce. Why design anything if a large company is only going to come in, steal your design and then mass manufacture it at prices you could never compete with.

Lucy, you are a supporter and defender of art and design, this does you no justice.

I suggest that FREEDOM would have far more credibility if they actually commissioned designers to produce exclusive ranges for them.

    SUPPORT DESIGN, DON”T KILL IT!

I think I would be so proud to have friends and family around for dinner to sit in my colourful chairs!

I L.O.V.E. the FREEDOM hemingway chaise.
I need to sit on one right now.
I’d love to win the DesignFiles competition.
But with so many entries, I’m not sure how.

    Perhaps a jazzy little blurb

Oh goodness me, thanks so much for all your comments so far people! I have also noted a couple of less friendly comments in the mix… have chosen not to edit them for now as of course everyone is entitled to their own opinions, however I wish it were not made as a personal attack on this little blog!

I feel that TDF does a great job of supporting local and independent design, and profiling local makers every week. I absolutely see your points of view, however please understand that I try to remain impartial – and when there is a good giveaway to offer my readers I often accept because I do love to reward you guys with generous prizes when they are offered!

If you would prefer not to enter that’s fine but please don’t spoil it for everyone else! There are lots of enthusiastic readers here keen to spruce up their home with something new – thanks so much for all your entries and keep ‘em coming!

  • Troy 4 years ago

I am sorry i have to agree with some of the negative comments and i think it needs to be said as so many people think these designs are so great, when in reality it is the original designs which are great. It is such a shame a company such as Freedom can not use their strengths to present new and original designs. I was extremely disappointed with their new catalogue which is full of obvious copies.

I love reading your blog too but you say “Please understand that I try to stay impartial” but you’re not impartial when you comment “Yippee thanks Freedom! Whoever wins this one, I will give you extra points if you buy 6 x Venus dining chairs in 6 different colours! How cool would that be?”

I would have posted this elsewhere on your blog but I wasn’t sure where to.

  • Pip 4 years ago

I love so much of the new freedom catalogue, especially the black and white rug that I’ve been searching for across the web and was considering having shipped from the States (yay now I don’t have to! and its half the price!!!) , but I think what would be most delicious in our new little apartment is the Loft Modular 2 Seat LH and Chaise RH found here: http://www.freedom.com.au/furniture/sofas/fabric-modulars/23147577 not only is it a glamourous grey, it also looks super comfy… just what I’m after!

The Digital 2.5 Seat Sofa for our new place. We need a new sofa and I can’t go past that much colour!

  • Anna 4 years ago

The Carpenter table! Such a beautiful piece that would work fabulously to cater for my growing brood- it looks like it could take a fair bit of kid frenzy. It would look amazing with a big bunch of vivid red boganvillia i have growing in my front yard. such a clean and simple piece. I’d really love something gorgeous to replace the rickety dining table i found on the verge pre-bubs – it’s seen a bit too much of life and doesn’t really like the boisterous kids – it would much prefer to be put into retirement outside as a potting table ( it told me so just the other day i swear).

  • Merle 4 years ago

I love the Satellite Coffee Table. Contempary, a little different and affordable. To win & get one for free…. what a way to start the week.

  • Chrystie 4 years ago

While I can really see a use for the Venus chairs (in a variety of colours) in my home to add extra vibrancy, I’m finding it hard to go passed the Laurent dining chairs!

The Carpenter Table. If I were a carpenter, I would make a table like this. But I’m not, so I NEED to buy it.

  • Kate O 4 years ago

    The Barbados Dining table,
    with Congo Dining Chairs.
Is all it would take to give my
    current kitchen flair!

  • Helena 4 years ago

It has to be Carpenter dining table – so timeless, so raw and it can have many uses! I’d love it combined with more ornate chairs as well as ultra modern furniture. I’d use it as a dining table or a study desk or a work bench. I also think that more you wear and tear it better it will look. I do have to say that elm seems like a weird choice of timber for a table of this style – recycled or weathered oak would be much more appropriate. I’d be tempted to limewash / bleach it

My husband and I went to Freedom last week and fell in love with the Providore dining table with the stainless steel top…..after doing IVF for the last 7 years(unfortunately unsuccessfully) hubby finally said enough is enough, we need to spend some money on the house! So we have knocked a couple of walls down (dust is following me as I type) and hope to have a lovely open plan space in a couple of weeks.
Sadly a new dining table is not in the budget cos ,you guessed it.,..we still have our heart set on one more cycle of IVF.But hey….how easy would it be to clean that table top with a baby in the picture?!! ;)

Lucy – you ARE actual media!

I have never seen Freedom looking so cool. I LOVE that round mirror with the oak frame (Banks?), the cowhide rug, the Fete dimpled tumblers, the 4 poster bed and Carpenters dining table. I think it’s time to redecorate!!

Those venus chairs are very cool but WAY too colourful for my neutral home.
