Amazing wallpapers by Marian Bantjes for Maharam

Marian Bantjes is a world-reknowned designer, typographer, writer and illustrator from Canada.  She’s especially famous for her super detailed illustrations and intricate hand worked patterns… and she must be doing something right because some of the coolest companies and publications across the globe are lining up to collaborate with her.! Just this year she’s made a Laser Sailboat for *Wallpaper Magazine, customised chairs and a table by Dutch design house Droog, and made some seriously INCREDIBLE wallpapers with boutique interiors brand Maharam.  Jeepers.  Big year!

Marian’s Laser Sailboat for *Wallpaper Magazine

Droog collaboration

I also REALLY love Marian’s more personal  Valentine’s day card project from earlier his year – laser-cut from recycled Christmas cards!? Simple genius!

Marian’s Valentine’s day card project earlier this year

Marian has a new book out.  It is truly SO beautiful…. 208 pages of luscious layouts and gold foil goodness… and best of all, Thames & Hudson REALLY wanna give one to one lucky Design Files reader! :)

To be in the running to win a copy of ‘I Wonder’ by Marian Bantjes, just leave your comment here by the end of the day (Tuesday November 9th in Melbourne!).  The winner will be drawn at random and will be contacted by email tomorrow!  If you subscribe to these posts by email, you just need to pop over to thedesignfiles.net and leave your comment to enter!

HUGE THANKS to Thames & Hudson for this very lovely giveaway!  Fingers crossed for many more T&H design book giveaways in the future!

*Update – the winning comment has been drawn and the lucky number  is #174- SDG!  Congratulations to Sarah, and thanks so much for all your entries!  This giveaway is now closed.

I saw Marian Bantjes speak at FIT here in New York last Monday. It was SO interesting to hear her talk about her work, her inspiration and her book. She’s very down-to-earth and was wearing the most amazing boots (my iPhone photo didn’t do them justice). She’s a true inspiration to anyone who has a vision and the desire to share it with the world.

An incredible artist, and if I might say so, a great hook which, reading the comments, has flushed out some interesting takes on her work, and a seal of approval for Design Files. The age of hi-def web based information has ironically/inevitably lead to design based books becoming even more tactile, detailed and luscious. Bantje’s book is no exception – you just want to run your fingers over that cover! And her work is so inspirational because she takes a simple idea, like recycling old cards, and delivers in such a way such that the intricacy and intimacy of her designs does not betray the singularity of thought that she began with. Thanks for giving it such excellent coverage and I look forward to your next post!

  • alex zabotto-bentley 4 years ago

Marian’s work with simple white refined sugar and Stefan Sagmeister could possibly be the classiest most controlled and poignant example of modern consumer pop art.

and as a stylist at heart it touched me very deeply.

pure genius.. i have trawled her website for years watching her upload a poster for a graphic exhibtion here a collab with another artists there.

    she is a dream
