NSW Home – Lisa Madigan

Kitchen (OMG those benchtops!) – all photos and styling by Lisa Madigan.

The resident of this dreamy beachside cottage is artist, stylist and online retailer Lisa Madigan – plus one husband and two devoted dalmatians (Oberon & Mia)!  Four years ago Lisa discovered this perfect little cottage in Kangaroo Valley on the South Coast of NSW, and completely fell in love.  She was SO taken with this special place, she turned her life upside-down to acquire it, and moved from Sydney just to live here.  The cottage was in need of some serious TLC so the pair took to it straight away – scrubbing the beautiful original wide floorboards, painting all the walls white, renovating the kitchen – even pouring their own concrete for the bench tops!  After an exhausting first day moving in they were woken up by their new in-house wombat, not too happy to have had his residence taken over!

The cottage was built in the 1880′s, and was originally home to The Kangaroo Valley Times – for this reason Lisa refers to the place affectionately as her ‘little paper house’.  Recently she held a ‘cottage exhibition’ of her artworks in the house – WOW how special!  (And brave!)  Although I must say if I had been there I would probably find myself constantly distracted from the work, admiring the details of the home and snooping through all Lisa’s beautiful trinkets!  If you missed out on the cottage exhibition, you can still catch the show, entitled ‘Salted Grace’, at Sydney’s Global Gallery in Paddington from the 10th – 21st November.

Lisa is currently working towards her 10th solo exhibition, ‘Aphrodisia’, to be held in February next year.  Then she has a dream to exhibit in New York sometime over the next 24 months.  I have no doubt she’ll get there!  Lisa also has a blog and e-store – do pay her a little online visit – there are such gorgeous things to see and even more shots of her beautiful home!

All shots you see here are are taken and styled by Lisa – picture perfect!  Thanks so much Lisa for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Lucy’s Redesign Roundup – Furniture

After such a wonderfully warm welcome yesterday [you guys are so nice!], Lucy is back to share some of her favourite redesigned furniture! There are some great Australian designers & Lucy also shares some of her own use re-purposed ideas too. Love it all! – Jenny x

The Bespoke Burlap range from Cloth Fabric

Today I’m looking at some of my favourite items of furniture fashioned from recycled or reused materials, I love that many of these items are individual or one-off’s, and employ old-fashioned traditional craft methods and skills to create. Not a mass-produced, identical item in sight!!

Suzie Stanford – ‘Tea Towel Travellers’ Furniture’

Here is the brilliant Suzie Stanford again with her furniture pieces re-upholstered using second hand vintage linen tea towels.

Pair of London Traveller’s Chairs for Liberty of London

Commission pieces with a beach theme

The linens depict Australiana plants, flowers and seaside themes, or overseas collected linens like the fabulous London chairs created for Liberty. Each piece is a one-off, and I just can’t get enough of the vibrant colours and overall kitsch appeal!

Studio Sam – Bookscreens & Book Block Tables

These fabulous Bookscreens are the creation of Samantha Parsons from Studio Sam.

Brooke the Bookscreen

Mini Bookscreens

The Bookscreens utilise pre-loved hardback books, firstly dissembled to remove the pages and then reassembled using traditional book binding techniques. Each screen is individual and they all have their own names (too cute!). I love the arrangement of colours in graduated hues or tonal variations, which is the result of each books original colour.

The Siena Book Block Tables are made from the discarded inner pages from the Bookscreens. Clever eh?! Not wanting to waste the pages they have been re-fashioned into these very beautiful sculptural tables. The tables provide gorgeous snapshots of the images, colours and words once hidden away in books.

Cloth – Bespoke Burlap Range

The Bespoke Burlap range from Cloth feature cushions and abandoned furniture from the street, that have been upholstered with over-printed fair trade coffee sacks.

The original coffee sacks are quite beautiful in their own right with bold colours and motifs from the different parts of the globe they originate, and its lovely these intrinsic patterns and textural qualities are visible, and create a design feature along with Cloths trademark screen prints.

Repurposed shelving

I thought I’d finish with some shelving created from….well….. anything but shelves!

I love the shelving at Sonido cafe in Fitzroy! A combination of old mix-matched wire baskets and used wooden boxes have been utilised as very cute shelving! So simple, but so very effective.

Here are some of my shelving pieces at home, re-employing old boxes and wine crates for wall shelves, and an old book case turned upside down to form great kitchen storage!

Lucy’s Redesign Roundup – Homewares

This week we’re excited to welcome the beautiful Lucy King to the guest blog! Lucy will be sharing some of her favourite designs that use recycled items to make wonderfully unique new items. Lucy has done an amazing job with topic, every day is GOLDEN! – Jenny x

A cluster of Lee Broom’s stunning ‘Decanterlights’- LOVE!

Hi, my name is Lucy King and I love hunting, sourcing and collecting all sorts of cast out and second hand things!  I have a particular fondness for old kitchen paraphernalia, and can often be found staking out op-shops and markets for jettisoned goodies.

Some of my treasured finds form the basis for illustrations, get re-worked into new creations, or simply find their way into my own house and garden.  It seems I’m not the only one obsessed with the discarded, with many designers switched on to the concept of transforming old and unwanted items into clever new designs.

I have the pleasure this week in profiling some of my favourite designs resurrected from second-hand or found materials, all with the common theme of products that have been Recycled, Repurposed, Upcycled or Reused in some form – with many of the designs reflecting my love for utilitarian kitchen products.

Today I’m focusing on Homewares!

Suzie Stanford – ‘Teaspoon lights’

I think I have a design crush on Suzie Stanford. All of her designs are one-off pieces created from second-hand finds – and all of them are stunningly beautiful.

Suzie’s Teaspoon Lights are made from layers of collected souvenir tea spoons –who’d have thought kitsch souvenir spoons could be transformed into something so stunning!

Focus on Art – ‘kitchen owls’

These owl sculptures from Focus on Art are assembled almost completely from recycled kitchen items – and don’t you think they suit their adopted body parts so perfectly well?!

Tea-strainers, colanders, bottle tops, jar lids, serviette holders, metal cake plates and washers etc have all been scavenged and then pieced together to create individual owls, and they all have their own names to match their personalities! I own one. He hangs around in my kitchen guarding my favourite teas.

Me Old China – ‘Polly Put The Kettle On’ wall plates’

These tongue-in-cheek plates are my playful take on traditional wall plates!

As a ceramic designer by trade I’ve gone full circle from once designing patterns for tableware, to now utilising cast out plates to create individual and one-off pieces. I like the idea of revitalising what many people see as mundane plates and making features of their old fashioned design style.

Gregory Bonasera – Electric Mavis teacup lightshades

These gorgeous lightshades from Gregory Bonasera are made from recycled pretty china teacups and saucers, and are a particularly cute way to utilise op-shop crockery.

You’d think the cups and saucers were originally designed to be hung upside down as lightshades, because they’ve evolved effortlessly into their second-life!

Lee Broom – ‘Decanterlights’

Lee Broom is an English designer, and I just love his sophisticated range of ‘Decanterlights’.

Each light is made from a lead crystal decanter sourced from antique markets and vintage shops. Some are left as original clear crystal, and others covered in a polished gold – ether way they are quite stunning.

Finally, I thought I’d share a couple of items in my house created from recycled or repurposed materials.

First is one of my favourite pictures, made for me from a friend (I’m very lucky to have such clever friends!) It’s made from pieces cut from used tin cans; tuna tins, jasmine tea canisters, coconut milks, anchovy fillets etc have all been collaged together, and I love the mix of colour and pattern it creates.

And lastly, one of my own teacup planters.  I also love collecting old teacups and saucers and think they make wonderful pots for small plants!  The colours and patterns on the old cups are a perfect contrast to plants foliage, and the saucers are a perfect drip tray!

Ask Alice

Postcards from Melbourne stationery label Ask Alice.

I always feel a bit dumb when I discover some local designer or business that has probably been around forever and I should definitely already know about.  Latest example – these super cute paper goods from Melbourne-based label Ask Alice.

All Ask Alice products are printed in Melbourne on recycled paper… the illustrations are so freaking CUTE, and the range include postcards, giftcards, notebooks and gift tags.  You can buy them online here… and I am pretty sure I have also seen them at Little Sparrow in Caulfield!?  Spotted any other stockists?  Let me know!

Guest Blogging this week – Re-design round up with Lucy King!

Customised vintage plates by this weeks guest blogger – Lucy King

Do you remember Lucy King!?   You should!  She is awesome.  You have seen her illustrations and jewellery design here, and you have even snooped inside her home here!

AND now, you get to see Lucy all week on the Guest Blog!

Lucy has a passion for recycled, re-purposed and re-used design (I am still getting used to the ‘upcycle’ term… still seems a bit weird to me, I think I will stick with ‘re-purposed’ for now :)

ANYWAY you have never seen such brilliant examples of recycled and re-purposed design!  Ms King is definitely an expert in the field!  This week she’ll share a brilliant round-up of homewares, furniture and jewellery finds, all of which re-use found materials in some way.

Pats on the back all round to Lucy and the brilliant Jenny B who dreamed up this excellent re-design round-up idea.  Genius!

Make sure you pop over to the Guest Blog this week for Lucy’s fantastic finds! (and please leave a comment if you like her work! She would love to hear from you!) x
