The Richmond studio / city home of textile designer Nicola Cerini (including close-up of one of her fabulous rugs!)

Love all the details and textile-based artworks in Nicola’s light-filled lounge room / showroom!

I was lucky enough recently to visit the city ‘pied a terre’ / studio of Melbourne textile designer Nicola Cerini! Nicola designs and showcases her gorgeous range of textile-based products from this fantastic light-filled converted Richmond warehouse, and spends half of each week living here too. The rest of the time she lives in the seaside town of Torquay… man, gotta love that work-life balance thing!

Nicola’s success story as an independent Melbourne-based designer is 100% guaranteed to inspire any emerging designer out there! She established her design studio and brand in 1995, creating original textile designs inspired by nature, for a range of bags, accessories and homewares. These days, her distinctive and well-loved designs are distributed nationally by over 150 retailers, and Nicola also exports to Japan and Hong Kong, having been a recipient of two Australian Export Development Grants.

In recent years Nicola has also broadened her markets and expanded through licensing. How grown-up and business-like is that? VERY. Nicola’s licensed products include her vibrant and varied tableware, aprons and fabulous T-towels (with pom poms!), and of course those brilliant rugs! I LOVE that coral/grey one in her showroom / loungeoom! Truly beautiful.

Alongside her business success, Nicola also maintains an active arts practice, and also shares her skills through lecturing and mentoring emerging textile designers. Wowsers. It appears we have another super-human multi-tasker in our midst!

Aside from all these endless and inspiring achievements… I am just seriously impressed by Nicola’s brave bright yellow kitchen. Nice! :)

It really doesn’t get much better than a bright yellow kitchen (…unless you have an original Marc Pascal pendant lamp, of course)

One of Nicola’s textile artworks hangs in the stairwell…

Upstairs is Nicolas’s studio. Here she designs and tests new prints, and takes care of the day to day runnings of her busy business.

Rolls and rolls of gorgeous original printed fabrics in Nicola’s studio! Whilst these are designed for Nicola’s bag range, subject to availability, you can also buy the original screenprinted fabrics by the metre… info here.

Love the ‘walled courtyard’ feel in Nicola’s little garden…
