An Award-Winning Architect’s Streamlined Terrace House Is Up For Sale

On the Market

When Chris Bosse, director of international architecture firm LAVA, purchased this classic Paddington terrace home in 2014, it’s 80s roots were evident. Internal walls had been removed, Greek columns and an arch separated the living rooms, and terracotta kitchen tiles paired with exposed clinker bricks were ‘highlights’.

Once dark and dated, Chris transformed this terrace home into a light-filled, modern sanctuary. Now he’s looking for the next project, and this gem on the border of Paddington and Woollahra is on the market!

After returning from a trip to Tuscany, Chris Bosse of LAVA was initially drawn to the sunny courtyard surrounded by brick walls in this Victorian terrace house in Paddington, and having recently inherited a dog with his partner, the couple needed to find somewhere with outdoor space.

Chris quickly set about transforming the dark, dated terrace to create a light-filled, spacious, home. One of the main priorities was opening up the connection between indoor and outdoor areas, which is now a pivotal feature of the home. Wide timber flooring went down over the old floorboards and terracotta tiles, streamlining the dining, living and kitchen areas into one continuous space creating the sense of more space in the process.

Storage has been created and optimised at every opportunity in this home! Floor-to-ceiling shelves in the dining/living area act as both as a display area for special things, as well as satisfying the very practical need for ample storage space in a small terrace house.

At the centre of everything is an open-plan kitchen featuring that opens directly to the outside courtyard a custom made island bench (‘that really is island-shaped!’ says Chris) as well as streamlined full-height pantry and rangehood. ‘The best thing about the design for us is that the indoor/outdoor works well for entertaining, there is more light, more space, and every surface is a design element making a statement, and has more than one function – for example, the decorative screen on the stairs is also a balustrade and a privacy screen’. Upstairs a small room has been turned into an additional living zone, whilst the main and second bedrooms both feature built-in robes.

Located centrally on the border of Paddington and Woollahra, situated just behind Oxford Street, Chris loves that ‘it’s walkable to the city, close to beaches and the fantastic parks. And of course, great cafes!’ Some local favourite spots include The Italian Bar, Centennial Park and the London Hotel.

Tivoli Terrace is open for inspection by appointment. Check out the full listing here
